DETOUR is excited to welcome back Elena Colombi to the Hot Mass decks this September for an evening of pulsating polyrhythms, industrial grooves, and flexed techno.

Many DJs claim to champion free-spirited eclecticism, but few truly break boundaries or defy convention. Enter Elena Colombi, a DJ and radio host whose inspired sets are as open-minded as they are mind-altering. She masterfully plays with the emotions of listeners and dancers alike, navigating shifts in intensity, tone, light, and darkness. While ‘anything goes’ might be her mantra, her dynamic sets are perfectly balanced, demonstrating an effortless flow that many DJs spend a lifetime trying to achieve.

On opening duties, DETOUR’s own AlexInExile will set the tone for the evening with their own eclectic curated selection of jams.

Elena Colombi likes the weird and wonderful things in music. Her show on NTS proves that, skipping as it does from techno to EBM, post punk to industrial and wave music with an always inquisitive ear. An under-the-radar regular at some choice parties around London for years, she is sure to break out into the wider consciousness in 2017, and we hope that this new podcast from her goes some way to assisting with that, because she is a selector well worth sharing. 

Filled with frosted industrial landscapes, muffled drums and plenty of metallic surfaces, Colombi’s mix finds light in darkness and human emotions in abstract sounds. It’s a fully realized sonic world that could be old, could be new, but is never less than wholly absorbing and uniquely odd.

With this episode of DT podcast Elena guides us through her mood as well. The journey begins with Le Chocolat Noir's impassive voice layed over strained delayed drum loops. The anxious state flows smoothly into Der Gotling's minor synths forming strong lines and short after everything returns to disorder. But anarchistic vocals and obscure melodies are here just for a while, followed with the gentle electro rhythms and then even some sunny house jam.

The second half of the hour is given to the hands of the acid, sneaky and wary at first. But once acid flux becomes really furious, all the energy is being absorbed by trippy hymn to a phobia from S.M. Nurse. With the last track Wick Wills wipes off the dust from the brilliant vocal of Martin Dupont and takes us back to the glittering synth melodies from beloved 80's.

For the next few weeks, we'll be kicking off the Hot Mass podcast series with sets from all of our residents, starting with recordings from the recent Hot Mass x Berlin party at Ohm Berlin. @alex_price is a co-founder of the Detour label and crew, which program the third weekend at Hot Mass. Alex was on opening duties at the Ohm takeover and knocked it out of the park with a set of thick, moody techno.

If you told me that I would be playing alongside 3 of my favorite DJs a few years ago, I would have laughed and wouldn’t have believed you. Dreams do come true though... in the past year I’ve been on lineups with Patrick Russell, Lena Willikens, and will be playing before Silent Servant this month. Each DJ has taught me so much about the craft of DJing: Patrick with obsessive attention to detail and frequencies, Lena who knows how to keep things slow while constantly building tension, and Silent Servant who always lets his roots shine through and knows how to keep things abrasive, but funky.

This recording from May when I opened for Lena is really special to me and it encapsulates a lot of the sounds I really enjoy - I hope you do as well.

Llevaba tiempo queriendo grabar una sesionz exclusivamente con música de pista 90´s y estas semanas de confinamiento me han permitido rebuscar entre mis discos y rescatar cosas que ya tenía olvidadas: Deep, Tech, Tribal, House... USA, UK, Italia, Bélgica... cortes poco conocidos de sellos que me marcaron en su momento como Brainiak, Network... combinados con algún clásico de esos años. Todo 90's salvo una excepción que cuelo en la mezcla en el último tramo de la sesión que creo le da un toque más personal al conjunto.
Una pena que algunos discos están bastante deteriorados y hay momentos que la calidad del sonido no es buena por lo que no me siento plenamente satisfecho con el mix final, pero es lo que hay.
Jorge me comentó que grabara algo para Oven y ¡voilá! este es el resultado.
