Welcome back to our inflight radio, we’re just slightly adjusting the trajectory towards the idea of imminent ecstasy. Dinner will be served in the next half an hour. Our guest for this edition of lunar landscapes is a local expert in the audible field: Citizen Maze aka Adam McCoy(no relation). A surgeon in every form of the definition, his precise and methodical approach to all things sound brings artistry to the world of DJ’ing. Or, as I like to call it “exploiting other’s artwork in a poetic manner”. His perfectionist ideals are also very apparent in his newly launched record label ‘Mirror Tapes’ (TIP!!) and the debut compilation that’s just dropped, the stunning collection of dubbed-out fairytales from around the world. Adam’s prodigious contribution is three and half hours of planet-hopping merrymaking, all whilst still having a foot in the shallow end of the rhythm section, quixotic exploits across all states of consciousness, layers upon layers of perfectly woven, history-rich tapestry. There is detailed explorations of all genres, sub-genres and even inventing new ones. It emerges as somewhat of a lecture in the field, cause and effect in full effect (big ups Ishikawa). As the mix peaks and drops, the journey to each emotional high is unique, both sides of the peak explore creative ways to not only get there but also the best way to leave. It’s impossible to really nail the mix down as a single piece, instead, I think of it as an entire exhibition at a gallery. Anyway, enough thought, just block out the next three and half hours and press play and feel.

I realized that I probably don’t have influences, but that there are lots of records I’ve been growing up with before I left Belgrade at the beginning of the 90s. I pulled some of the records and recorded some songs, realized afterwards that the records end in 1991 when I left. It’s more an old fashioned idea of a tape for someone dear than a mix"

https://soundcloud.com/marcpinol & https://soundcloud.com/hugo-capablanca: This mix was recorded live at Zurich's long-lasting, true iconoclast event series, Spezialmaterial, currently being solely programmed by decades in the business, connoisseur curator Cio Assereto, and holding the longest residence known at iconic Swiss club Zukunft. Usually a slot reserved for nothing short of legendary figures like thee one and only Andrew Weatherall (their most regular guest) or Optimo (their second most?), an open-to-end set at Spezialmaterial is certainly not for everyone. A journey into the weirder dark corners of club music? An energetic yet hypnotic psychedelic trip? We'll let you be the judges of that. It is certainly 100% C.P.I. at its essence. Dive in with an open mind and ye shall be rewarded.

C.P.I. is the collaborative effort from long-time Hivern Discs operative Marc Piñol, a staple in Barcelona’s underground electronic scene and one of its most revered DJs, and Berlin-based artist, DJ and self proclaimed dilettante, Hugo Capablanca who runs his somewhat iconic label(s) Discos/ Ediciones Capablanca.

Bound by a shared love of drone luminaries, ’80s electronica experimentalists, early acid house adopters, mutant techno and forward-thinking industrial sounds, the duo wrote their first Ep El Tunel/ Proceso in a whirlwind and, released on 2015 on John Talabot’s imprint, positioned themselves among the most talked club acts of the moment, earning both press and public acclaim with an innovative blend of their influences and modern production techniques that became easily distinguishable.

In 2018 their sophomore Ep Meine Hand is released. That same year C.P.I. receive the prestigious RTF Foundation composer’s grant and work for months in what consolidates in their debut album, Alianza.
Released on 2020 to wide critical acclaim, the LP featured Anna Homler, Veronica Vasicka and Spacemen 3 members, among others, and represented a pivotal shift in the duo’s creative output, leaving aside dancefloor concerns towards a fully immersive sound experience.

On May 2021 C.P.I. performed their first-ever live show in Barcelona deconstructing Alianza into a dark ambient maelstrom. Ambient Blackout, the live recording of the show, released end of 2023 on Ediciones Capablanca.

This is an excerpt from a set at an undisclosed nightclub recorded this year direct from the board. Looking to DJs from back in the day they used to play it all - liaisons, kraftwerk, noia, b-52s, nitzer ebb, first choice acapellas etc mixed with the latest techno and house productions making for an interesting and dynamic mix that actually moved up and down instead of seamlessly staying in one place for hours on end as we see very much today. There was roughness and unintentional beauty with the quick cuts and urgent energy. I personally try to keep this spirit in mind when playing, balancing giving the crowd what they want and also what they will not expect sometimes with mixed results, sometimes with flying colours...this mix I would hope reflects some of that in a modern club context.

Felix Dickinson’s story is closely linked with the story of house. He has been playing it (and making it legal to do so via his pre criminal justice act rave orchestration) since day one, has held decade long residencies in Japan and has made it under names ranging from Foolish and Sly to Bastedos. Besides working with labels like Rush Hour and DFA, he also runs his own Cynic Music and has been a key DJ  at places like Glastonbury, Garden Festival and Sonar. His style is, generally, to play music from all over the place, but he always manages to mesh them together into some thing fun and coherent. 

Over the course of 70 odd minutes here he shows off his far ranging taste and looks back as much as forward. Carefully controlled throughout, the set mixes up floor filling house with breezy grooves, chattery Chicago jack and euphoric piano anthems. It’s party starting but tastefully so and once again has you wondering who needs DJ Harvey when you have Felix Dickinson.
