In the Cartesian view of identity, the body is a container for our mind, personality and ultimately our soul. But what happens when technology allows us to transcend the limitations of physical reality as we know it? In a post-corporeal life, our bodies may no longer be confined to the rather cumbersome form of a human but instead a vast digital network. Matrixxman just so happens to be an inhabitant of such an environment. When he is not busy spawning a myriad of artificial intelligence entities and endless virtual worlds within worlds, he also enjoys composing music. The essence of which is crafting new interpretations of something straddling the grey area between classic Chicago house and Detroit techno. "Resurgent techno atavism" as he prefers to call it.

In 2013, Matrixxman’s debut EP "The XX Files" received critical acclaim, garnering praise from the likes of The Fader, Pitchfork, XLR8R and Fact Magazine. His relentless rhythm track "Protocol" has been supported and played by a who's who of dope underground elite including Levon Vincent, Jimmy Edgar, Jeff Mills, San Soda, Boddika, Pfirter, Danny Daze and Dubfire. Meanwhile on the house side of things, various tunes of his have been rinsed by tastemakers such as Larry Heard, HNNY, Huerco S, Seth Troxler, and Damian Lazarus... to name a few. Endeavoring to construct "the most futuristic shit ever" with just a year under his belt, Matrixxman is a name that will be known for years to come.

Glass Animals - Gooey (Wild Culture Remix)

Masterminded by Ricardo Villalobos and named after a group of Russian revolutionaries, laptop supergroup Narod Niki made their debut at MUTEK in 2003. Using the then, relatively new Ableton Live software to network their live jam, some of the biggest names in techno participated in this auspicious performance: Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Akufen, Robert Henke, Dimbiman, Dandy Jack, Cabanne, Luciano and Dan Bell. While bootlegs of this recording have been circulating on the web for a while, this is the first time we have released the recording.

M15.001 - Narod Niki Live @ MUTEK 2003

In 2011 Amon Tobin made his MUTEK debut with the world premiere of his massive 3D audiovisual behemoth, ISAM.  The original  25′ × 14′ × 8′ set that he performed in acted as the vehicle for his seventh album of the same name — an experimental and accessible ride through invented instrumentation and synthesis. As a live, generative and reactive audio and visual performance, ISAM was narrative, subtle and bombastic. The project took Tobin around the world for two years, finally wrapping up, fittingly, at MUTEK Mexico in October 2013. We are proud to present the audio recording of this unforgettable performance, for the first time.

John Balance and Peter Christopherson (ex-members of such famous acts as 23 Skidoo and Current 93) were a part of the notorious Psychic TV before creating Coil in 1983. Inspired by ritual practice, transformation, and musical exploration, Coil left their indelible mark on several generations of musicians and listeners. Their musical journeys, oftentimes serene, impulsive, or cinematic, always subscribed to the counter currents, as they ceaselessly opened new possibilities - as timeless as they were modern. This recording, never released before, featured Christopherson and longtime associate Thighpaulsandra. A great loss for music,  both Christopherson and Balance have since passed away.

M15.003 - Coil Live @ MUTEK 2003

British ambient samplist James Leyland Kirby uses purposely old or deteriorating recordings to build grainy, evocative atmospheres that say as much about time and age as musical texture and notions of sentimentality or nostalgia. The prolific Kirby got his start in the mid-’90s as pioneering pop-abuser V/Vm, and then moved onto samples of classic(al) recordings as The Caretaker. The resulting effect is mesmerizing, and has led critics internationally to refer to Kirby’s work as one of the leading lights of the hauntology movement. As a performer he revels in undermining all expectations, and this subversive set of noisey emotionality and home movies, fueled by a full bottle of whisky and recorded at MUTEK 2010, left the audience agape.

Operating out of San Francisco since the mid 90’s, and now based in Berlin, Marc Barrite records in the disguise of Dave Aju. Boiling down a broad range of styles that take him from the funkadelics of Bernie Worrell through the fusion jazz of Herbie Hancock to the aloof disco of Arthur Russell and the sampledelic Steinski, an Aju record often doubles as a history lesson in American groove. Having made 3 solo appearances  at MUTEK since 2008, he also stormed the stage as the singer in Guillaume and Coutu-Dumont’s Side Effects band too. We are pleased to present for the first time, this recording of Dave Aju’s rousing finish to our 2012 edition, which he wrapped up with serious heart and soul.

The deep, immersive echo chamber that sits at the centre of DeepChord’s signature work with Echospace may appear inspired by the genre-defining work of first-wave dub-technoists that appeared on the Chain Reaction label in the mid to late 90s. But it’s also work that’s quintessentially building upon the Detroit scene where it was born, and that divine marriage of roots and vision makes the work of Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell at once so highly considered, so timeless, and so pertinent. The distinguishing feature of the duo’s sound is its ability and willingness to stand still; whereas much of dub techno attempts to propel the listener forward in either a lover’s rock groove or the cushioned reverb of a driving beat, DeepChord’s synth-driven analog warmth trades not only in static ambience but also propulsive design. Their set at Métropolis in 2011 was nothing short of enveloping and transcendent.
