Irish techno, electro and electronica producer Chymera makes his debut here on Canadian
label My Favourite Robot Records with this superb 4 track EP.
Before now the talented craftsman has released on labels like Ovum, Kompakt and
Connaisseur and has been active for a decade. His sound is filmic and patient, features
plenty of great synth work and therefore fits in perfectly with the MFR sound.
Up first is ‘Other Worlds’, a serene cut with proud chords and percolating drums down
below. Slivery and reflective, shiny and golden, it’s a lush way to start. ‘Vertigo’ is then a
more direct cut with pixelated chord stabs, arpeggiated bass and a slick sense of groove
that carries us well into the future.
On the flip, ‘Inner Worlds’ pairs things back to a more insular deep house groove. Sombre
chords sway back and forth as hiccuping snares roll over rubbery drums. There is mystery
and intrigue in the little pads that float about and the whole thing has a soothing effect on
mind, body and soul. Lastly, ‘Erku’ is the deepest of the lot, where bubbling drums and
synths unravel in an eerie and spacious sound world. Stuttering drums eventually arrive to
kick start things and the whole thing is soft focus and perfectly cosmic.
Once more here MFR have unearthed an artful producer who can do so much more than
just lay down a track - instead he injects a true sense of musicality into his work as
displayed on this standout EP.

Chymera - Vertigo

Romanian DJ/producer BOg returns on John Digweed’s legendary Bedrock imprint with his single, ‘Rakuten’. With releases on Crosstown Rebels, Bedrock Records and a upcoming release on Get Physical, this 24 years young artist already managed to get himself a respected place in the international house scene. 

‘Rakuten’ perfectly showcases what the young Romanian is capable of. A dreamy 9 minute storyteller which slowly builds to it’s peak. It’s easy to hear why this track get's heavily played by John Digweed himself. Already released on vinyl, the digital release is set for the 17th of July on Bedrock Records.

The white walls were illuminated by the glow of the morning sun. They appeared a stark contrast to the royal blue texture of the sky which radiated warmth in the early hours. Birds soared eagerly upon the breeze above the water down below as the flickering leaves of palm trees blew gracefully in the wind. It was a beautiful scene, like something from a picture book or postcard. Soon this would all be gone. 

Deepwave are set to release a new EP from Sebastian Deluca, however it was the remix from label boss Ian Metty which caught our upmost attention.

Julian Stetter - "Bushwick"

It’s been two years since Stefan Z last released on this label, but the three tracks he serves up prove the wait has been more than worth it.

The Berlin based Canadian is the boss of the Rhombus label and is a top electronic production talent. He makes his sounds stand out with slick vocals or moving melodic elements, most likely because of his formally trained piano and trumpet playing skills. He’s had support from the likes of Sasha, Solomun and Adriatique, and his label parties in Vancouver were key in developing the city’s underground scene.

The super title track goes first and is a freaky number with spacecraft circling the groove, building tension in the melodic riffs and futurism in the drums. It’s a dramatic track with heavy, lumpy kicks and one to jolt the floor into action.

‘Borni’ is another long and involving tune, this time with more mystery and suspense in the way it builds. The drums get you marching as synths and ghoulish motifs pan about to creepy effect. It’s a real set building track that keeps you on edge.

Lastly, ‘Cipe’ is the toughest of the lot, with stiff hits and withering cosmic chords speaking of an intergalactic war. Underpinned by warm bass, it’s a widescreen cinematic affair with real beauty in the pads that eventually take over the show.

All three tracks here are mini epics that really take you on a trip.

The Rapture’s Luke Jenner ventures firmly into the dance floor, this time in full force, on Glittering Jewel, the Brooklyn-based producer’s debut EP under his Meditation Tunnel guise. 

Following his initial outing, La La La, on Life and Death’s vinyl-only sub-label, Blitz Series, Glittering Jewel sees Jenner step up with three outsider cuts, dripping in personality.

Cloaked subtly into the backdrop, Jenner’s unmistakable croon features throughout the disk - a highlight across the board. While dilapidated drum machines, crunched beyond recognition, propel the record into techno territory, Glittering Jewel retains the artist’s bespoke youthful sense of blue-eyed naiveté.

Red Axes come through with an unclassifiable, stripped-down reinterpretation of Fire Fly, the perfect pair to deconstruct and re-contextualize the original material. 

Carefully pressed on high-quality, transparent vinyl, LAD039 stands as a testament to the label’s shifting auditory ethos.
