Vancouver based Stefan Zlatarits is better known as Stefan Z, a producer who has worked with labels
like Resopal Shallware and Circle Music, but who also runs his own label, Rhombus. His first EP for
the My Favorite label features four fantastic tracks that explore deep and sci-fi leaning house and tech
with plenty of cinematic values.
Opener ‘Love Tonight’ is a go-slow deep house cut laden down with emotion. It’s a sparse
arrangement but paints a very vivid picture with its molten bass, Vangelis like synth patterns and
churning kick drums, and is the sort of thing that sucks you in and traps your right in its vast and
cavernous core.
Next up, ‘Planks’ is punchier but is just as deep. Synthesized sounds marble the airwaves and a
serious dub undercurrent flows beneath the whole airy concoction. Some poignant and heartfelt pads
help make this is devastating cut indeed.
‘No Words’ again marries dub warmth and propulsion to future facing synth patterns that recall the
visions of early techno and electro whilst. Stefan Z clearly knows his way around his machines and
manages to coax plenty of human feeling out of them, before going in tough on final track ‘Black
Jacket Future.’ This one is wrought with tension via the percolating, predatory bass notes. It explodes
into life with all sorts of cosmic rays, alien sounds and celestial melodies and closes out a seriously
heady and well-sequenced EP.
This is an assured and complete artistic statement from Stefan Z, and is one that immediately makes
him a fitting member of the ever-impressive My Favorite Robot label.

Amsterdam based record label Night Noise moves into the vinyl market and kicks things off in style with this release from the Rumanian Gemini Brothers duo. The titletrack Lost Babylon is backed with three delightful remixes from In Flagranti, Daniel Kyo and Moscoman, with whom we shared the decks few days ago in London. The Disco Halal headhoncho provides here a 11 minutes long epic dreamy synthetic rework, lovely ! Out in two weeks

The white walls were illuminated by the glow of the morning sun. They appeared a stark contrast to the royal blue texture of the sky which radiated warmth in the early hours. Birds soared eagerly upon the breeze above the water down below as the flickering leaves of palm trees blew gracefully in the wind. It was a beautiful scene, like something from a picture book or postcard. Soon this would all be gone. 

Deepwave are set to release a new EP from Sebastian Deluca, however it was the remix from label boss Ian Metty which caught our upmost attention.

Julian Stetter - "Bushwick"

It’s been two years since Stefan Z last released on this label, but the three tracks he serves up prove the wait has been more than worth it.

The Berlin based Canadian is the boss of the Rhombus label and is a top electronic production talent. He makes his sounds stand out with slick vocals or moving melodic elements, most likely because of his formally trained piano and trumpet playing skills. He’s had support from the likes of Sasha, Solomun and Adriatique, and his label parties in Vancouver were key in developing the city’s underground scene.

The super title track goes first and is a freaky number with spacecraft circling the groove, building tension in the melodic riffs and futurism in the drums. It’s a dramatic track with heavy, lumpy kicks and one to jolt the floor into action.

‘Borni’ is another long and involving tune, this time with more mystery and suspense in the way it builds. The drums get you marching as synths and ghoulish motifs pan about to creepy effect. It’s a real set building track that keeps you on edge.

Lastly, ‘Cipe’ is the toughest of the lot, with stiff hits and withering cosmic chords speaking of an intergalactic war. Underpinned by warm bass, it’s a widescreen cinematic affair with real beauty in the pads that eventually take over the show.

All three tracks here are mini epics that really take you on a trip.

The Rapture’s Luke Jenner ventures firmly into the dance floor, this time in full force, on Glittering Jewel, the Brooklyn-based producer’s debut EP under his Meditation Tunnel guise.

While dilapidated drum machines, crunched beyond recognition, propel the record into techno territory, Glittering Jewel retains the artist’s bespoke youthful sense of blue-eyed naiveté.

Red Axes come through with an unclassifiable, stripped-down reinterpretation of Fire Fly, the perfect pair to deconstruct and re-contextualize the original material. 

Carefully pressed on high-quality, transparent vinyl, LAD039 stands as a testament to the label’s shifting auditory ethos.
