Confession of an Un/believer

During his lessons, young Miles sings this haunting song to his Governess with the simple explanation “I found it, I like it. Do you?” The mysterious words are “Malo: I would rather be, Malo: in an apple tree, Malo: than a naughty boy, Malo: in adversity.” Librettist Myfanwy Piper found this rhyme in an old Latin grammar, intended to teach the difference between ‘malo’ (I wish), ‘malus’ (as noun: apple tree; as adjective: bad/wicked), ‘malum’ (apple), and ‘malum’ (evil, adversity). Canadian boy soprano Fraser Walters sang Miles at Seattle Opera in 1994, with the orchestra of Seattle Opera conducted by Richard Bradshaw.
