The “Iridescent schemes” was written between May to July 2023, inspired by the ways our perception on different things shifts endlessly - under the influence of every new “slant of light” (Emily Dickenson). The title of the piece derives from the phenomenon of goniochromism (from the Greek: gonia, meaning angle and chroma, meaning color) when certain surfaces appear to gradually change color as the angle of view or the angle of illumination changes.

The piece was commissioned by Georges Aperghis and is dedicated to him and the Schallfeld ensemble.

Iridescent Schemes - Schallfeld Ensemble

Konstantinos Baras, a Greek composer with a passion for complex and saturated sound, embarked on his musical journey following a diagnosis of HanDL syndrome at the age of 18. Baras is recognized for creating works that convey intense emotions and delve into the complexities of trauma, employing visceral, chaotic sounds marked by a continuous energy flow and aggressive gestures. 

Utilizing digital signal processing, noise, distortion and live interactivity, Baras extends the timbral profile of traditional instruments and seamlessly blends disjunct materials into unified structures. With interest in site-specificity and interdisciplinary collaboration, he works often with dancers and movement artists and engages creatively with space, lights, and visual effects. 

His continued entanglement with black metal and techno contributes to an arrestingly distinctive sound palette, exploring the potential of repetition and bodily mechanics to intensify a sound’s impact on the listener. Toward that aim, Baras organizes his compositions through various processes of iteration and fragmented circularity, manipulating duration and density, often utilizing repetitive material but subtly altering it with every reappearance. The end result is driving, gripping, and grave.

His music has been performed and commissioned by Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain Moscow Contemporary Ensemble (MCME), Vertixe Sonora Ensemble,Ensemble Multilaterale, among other, with performances in festivals and conferences such as, IRCAM ManiFeste, MIXTUR, Darmstadt, reMusik, ilSuono, Ticino Musica, among others.

Currently pursuing a PhD in Composition at Northwestern University, Baras holds Masters degree from Boston University, and Bachelors degree Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Jack Langdon (b. 1994, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians) is a musician, filmmaker, and writer with concentrations in experimental music, minimalist documentary, and cultural politics. 

Across mediums, Jack’s work stages elusive, complex encounters with commonplace subjects, scenes, and sounds. As a musician, he has created extensive work for pipe organs, and regularly performs on a variety of keyboard instruments as well as the Ojibwe wooden flute (bibigwan). His films focus on landscape, the built environment, memory, and their transmission through people. He writes on the political economy of cultural production and the workplace politics of American independent music making.

Jack has composed works for Yarn/Wire, Schallfeld Ensemble, Ensemble Dal Niente, Talea Ensemble, Prague Quiet Music Collective, Southland Ensemble, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, Trio SÆITENWIND, Yoshi Weinberg, Jack Yarbrough, Miroslav Beinhauer, Sara Constant, Jonathan Hannau, and Graeme Shields. His work has been supported by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, the Fromm Foundation, The Awesome Foundation, MISE-EN_PLACE, and the Prague City Gallery. 

As an improviser, he has projects with Jeff Kimmel, Hunter Brown, Olivia Shortt, Taylor Ho Bynum, Adam Shead, Webb Crawford, Anthony Vine, Erica Miller, Sam Scranton, Kelley Sheehan, Ishmael Ali, and Weston Olencki.

His recordings have been released by IMPREC, Sawyer Editions, Dinzu Artefacts, and Lobby Art Records. His written work has been published by Sound American, Cacophony, and Shred Magazine. Jack is a founding editor for Culture as Care Journal with Eli Namay and John Pippen. He runs an independent record label and music journal based in Chicago called Empty Stage.

He is currently studying for his PhD in Composition and Music Technology at Northwestern University, and holds degrees from Dartmouth College and Saint Olaf College. He is a Graduate Practicum Fellow at the Alice Kaplan Center for the Public Humanities in 2024 and 2025.

Bio: 
Danniel RIBEIRO is a Brazilian composer from Bahia. His compositional practice is driven by research and creative exploration, focusing on exploratory instrumental writing and improvised performances supported by emerging technologies and informed by investigations into culture and identity. He examines musical gesture, instrumentality, and materiality to expand the expressive possibilities of complex timbral constructs and instrumental/sound phenomena in his compositions. His work integrates theoretical inquiry with practical experimentation, often involving the development of tailored instrumental preparations, modifications, notational systems, practical sculptural objects, amplification/transduced electronic apparatuses, and performance techniques. Danniel’s goal is to critically engage with social and cultural dimensions of contemporary concert music through research, analysis, performance, and creation, exploring the interplay between idiosyncratic artistic invention and broader cultural dynamics.

A four-time recipient of Brazil's National Composition Prize (FUNARTE), Danniel has participated in events and residencies, including Klangspuren Schwaz (Austria), the Banff Centre (Canada), Domaine Forget (Canada), Barcelona Modern (Spain), Darmstadt (GER), Festival Musica (France), New Music on the Point (USA), and ilSUONO (Italy). His works have been performed at notable venues and festivals such as Empreintes (France), Morelia (Mexico), and Sala São Paulo (Brazil).

Danniel has collaborated with leading international ensembles, including L’Instant Donné, Yarn/Wire, Schallfeld, JACK Quartet, Barcelona Modern, RAGE Thormbones, collective lovemusic, Dal Niente, Vertixe Sonora, and Suono Giallo. He has also benefited from advanced studies with Chaya Czernowin, Franck Bedrossian, Clara Iannotta, Philippe Hurel, Malin Bång, Toshio Hosokawa, Felipe Lara, Daniel D'Adamo, Januibe Tejera, Mark Andre, Brian Ferneyhough, and Du Yun.

Danniel earned his master’s degree in composition (M.Mus.) at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University (Canada) in 2018, studying under Philippe Leroux. As a laureate of the 2023/24 George Ladd Prix de Paris, he pursued independent studies in France and recently completed the postgraduate specialization in instrumental and mixed composition at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg (France). Currently, Danniel is a Ph.D. candidate in music composition at UC Berkeley (USA), studying with Edmund Campion, Ken Ueno, Myra Melford, and Carmine-Emanuele Cella.

Schallfeld is an international ensemble for contemporary music based in Graz. The group sparks the interest of its audience by its vivid virtuosity and refined chamber music sound, paired with interpretations that pay special attention to concert format, creating events that adapt to the specific venue while aiming for a new dimension of listening.
The ensemble was founded in 2013 by alumni of Klangforum Wien and composition students of Kunstuniversität Graz. It currently consists of musicians from 8 nationalities and reflects the diversity and different interests of its members in its artistic direction. In the last few years, Schallfeld has been able to establish itself on international stages through exciting programming with a focus on young composers, innovative concert-stagings as well as through the quality of its collective improvisations and innovative use of live-electronics. 
Schallfeld sees its mission in bringing music of international young composers to Austria and acting as an ambassador for new music production abroad. Besides its own concert cycle in Graz, Schallfeld is regularly guest in festivals in Austria and abroad, such as Wien Modern, Impuls Graz, Klangspuren Schwaz, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, Afekt (Estonia), Poznan Musical Spring (Poland), EMA (Spain), Daegu International Contemporary Music Festival (South Korea). In 2016 and 2017 Schallfeld has been selected by the Ministry of Foreign/cultural Affairs as rappresentative of NASOM (New Austrian Sound of Music), a program designed to promote young Austrian artists internationally.
The ensemble is also involved in pedagogical activities and collaborative theater projects for children and adults. Schallfeld is funded by the municipality of Graz, the federal state of Styria, the Austrian federal Government and receives generous support from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and the iem (Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics) Graz. Past projects by Schallfeld have also received grants by the EU (Youth in Action), Music Austria (MICA) and KulturKontakt Austria.
