Jóhann is a figurehead in a dynamic and developing scene of composers who move freely and inventively between film scores, minimalist classical, ambient and electronic music. He is equally at home writing commissioned works for the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, Bang on a Can and Theatre of Voices ensembles, as he is collaborating with Tim Hecker, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Pan Sonic, CAN drummer Jaki Liebezeit, Marc Almond, Barry Adamson, and Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))).

Requests from filmmakers to use Jóhannsson’s music in their films has led to a flourishing career in writing original music for more than a dozen movies. Jóhannsson was awarded a Golden Globe in January 2015 for Best Film Score for The Theory Of Everything, directed by James Marsh, whilst his music for the film also earned him both Oscar and BAFTA nominations for Best Original Score.  Jóhannsson’s score for Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario was similarly honored with a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination in 2016.  

This year will see two major films featuring Jóhann’s original music: Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, and James Marsh’s The Mercy starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz.

~ About The Story ~

This mix was recorded live on August 28th, 2016 at Funkhaus Berlin in the external garden next to the river using 2 turntables and two cdjs.

It was a long day with the weather cooperating in the morning and into the afternoon. However in the distance we saw a storm  approaching which caused concern as we are set to play last in the line up when it was completely dark. During our set there was a surreal atmosphere with the wind and clouds and a lot of electricity in the air. The lightning from afar approached closer and closer formulating a very intense and unique set.

We intended to play for 3 hours but after just 1 hour the rain started heavy and we had to stop the music and quickly cover all the gear. The end of the last track in the mix has been added to the original recording. Due to the story behind the mix we are calling it "Storm approaching”.

This story was translated by an ancient scribe and is told in many ways depending on the culture. The chapters have been lost but the story remains intact.

Campfire Stories is a mix series by friends of Silent Season. The focus of the series is on storytelling through deeper electronic music. Artists weave together narratives using the emotional characteristics of ambient and techno music.

The Pluie/Noir Podcast is a monthly series of audio-visual podcasts featuring artists that have been actively working with Pluie/Noir since the start, as well as close friends and some guest artists we admire.

Each episode will feature a one hour audio collage/mix by one of our producers/djs or a guest, and a poster triptych with the visual interpretation of the podcast by a graphic artist.

Interview:

— Hi Masahiko. How are you?
I’m good, thanks!

— Where do you live and what do you do for a living? How do you intertwine this with the rest of your music-related activities?
I’m living in Kyoto and Nara, in Japan. I’m working as an event producer at Forum Kyoto, and as a director for promoting the countryside in Nara.
With my job in Kyoto, I have a lot of opportunities to meet artists, not only musicians but also visual artists/architects/photographers/designers and so on. The main aim is to make the communication between different fields of art. These experiences have a tremendous effect on my music-related activities. With my job in Nara ’ve been discovering Japanese traditional cultures in the countryside, which is always inspiring and beneficial to my creativity.

— How does Japan keep you excited and active, artistically speaking?
Some artists moved to Kyoto from Tokyo or many other cities over the last years, and I think it's due to the fact that the French Institute and Goethe Institute of Kyoto are key places to promote the connection between French/German artists and artistic local communities of Kyoto, making Kyoto very appealing for creatives. Some artists also stay in Kyoto as resident artists in those institutions and then decide to stay and live in Kyoto after. Kyoto is also known as a city of universities, and that might be an important factor to the enhancement of the local creative community.

I think there’re lots of small interesting communities because of this creative environment. I wouldn’t say Kyoto has an artistic movement or something like that, but I’m sure there’s a lot of opportunities to communicate with different types of artists in an environment that makes it easy to work together beyond any race or age. That makes me excited and keeps me active in Kyoto.

— Your podcast sounds very intimate. How did you record this mix and why did you chose the music you did?
I recorded it during an event at Forum Kyoto. My podcast is about the curiosity during the auditive experience. I often choose tracks which have been created by my friends when I DJ. I really appreciate this situation, especially because there’re many talented artists around me and their sounds are unique. Some tracks are from my personal collection, but this is how I show my appreciation to them by using them in this mix. Also several of my own tracks are included in the mix, and because my sound is inspired by the sound created by my friends, it all works well together.

— Plans for the near/far future?
I have a small music label called ‘MYTH’ which is a sub label of ‘shrine.jp' (experimental electric music label from Kyoto). I organize and produce the dance music releases for 'MYTH' with Ken’ichi Itoi. We've been releasing and continue to release digital EPs, but now we’re planning to release vinyl later this year. I’m also working actively on collaborative projects with individual artists like contemporary dancers, visual artists or multidisciplinary artists. A lot of projects are now in the progress, but I hope to have my own exhibition in near future.

Mysteries Of The Deep Podcast, Chapter IV. Amorphous by Eric C Holmes.

Eric grew up in southwest Florida in a very musical Baptist family. At an early age he discovered skateboarding, and this became his foundation and community for music, art and fashion. One thing led to another, and after playing various instruments in different bands in his early 20's he found himself tending bar at a club in London. It was there that he discovered contemporaries that allowed him to expand his ideas of music from acoustic to electronic.

Now in Brooklyn, he feels like he his surrounded by more talented people than ever before. He and his high-school buddy John Petro play together in a electronic-based project called Mariner.  He is inspired by people, ideas and endeavors that traverse the spectrum - those that cross through genre and subvert expectation.
