This month we welcome Tokyo-based electronic sound artist and lyricist, Yumi Iwaki.

Yumi is an extraordinary talent, who layers her voice, acoustic instruments, field recordings, modular synthesisers, and small synthesisers, as if travelling through an imagined landscape.

Her mix takes us through a selection of music she likes to listen to when she wants to relax, but at the same time add something spicy. The flow of sounds take her to different places while in a daze.

More often than not, a respected label introduces me to a new artist or a project. Sometimes, a rare instance occurs in reverse, where a favourite artist appears on a previously unknown [to me] label. This is the case with the Philadelphia-based Andrew Tasselmyer, whom I’ve been a fan of for his solo ambient releases on imprints such as Shimmering Moods, Constellation Tatsu, Polar Seas, Eilean, Home Normal, and laaps, among the many, but also as a member of Hotel Neon, which I’ve been following via Past Inside the Present, Thesis, Archives, Sound in Silence, and Fluid Audio. All of those are very familiar to me – in fact, you can find most of them in my Labels Directory, but the Las Vegas-based Mystery Circles is definitely new, and I only recognise a few names on its roster. So, more for me to hear! Now, back to the release! Titled Where Substance Meets Emptiness, this 8-piece album features more than just Tasselmyer’s beautiful ambience, with some piano keys and field recordings. There are lots of sparkling and shuffling beats and percussive elements reminiscent of the early IDM era, where harmony met rhythm. The track I am premiering for you today, “Flowers in a Storm”, reminds me of those days when I would listen to Arovane, Dabrye, Metamatics, Deaf Center, and Secede. This makes me want to revisit my very own liftmuziek sessions!

Taking in the magical surrealism of the celebrated Japanese author, Tasselmyer composes music that fades in and out of reality, bridging the atmospheric world of dreams and the present moment, where we find ourselves floating and merging with all the beautiful vibrations. Featuring some sonic postcards from his friends (Steven Kemner, Dave Mantel, and Sean Galloway), Tesselymyer paints a new world to traverse – one that is as imaginary as it is real, where “ordinary methods and immediate results are ditched along with their traditional maps in order to reach uncharted places of the imagination.” It’s an absolute pleasure to wander within this open space, and I find myself pleasantly lost among its many turns and expansive pastures.

The full album is out tomorrow, January 30th, 2024, on Mystery Circles. Mastered by Taylor Deupree, it is available as a digital, CD, or cassette edition. Beautiful album cover by his brother, Michael.

Æther #005 by Faux Tapes

Sometimes it’s the familiar things that get you. Microfibers, the self-titled debut release by visual artists and musical collaborators Jonny Campolo, Keegan Monaghan, and Eugene Wasserman, makes the everyday strange — conjuring up an intensity that belies its unassuming title, surfing the tension between the warmth of its communal effort and cool-to-the-touch presentation.

Microfibers is an otherworldly transmission from known territory. Recorded at Brooklyn’s totemic BC Studios — helmed by the same Martin Bisi who has presided over a host of avant classics in Gowanus since the 80s — the two-track album is mere degrees of separation from its influence. BC Studios was built with Brian Eno to make Ambient 4: On Land (1982), an out-there favorite at the heart of Microfibers’ inspirational cosmos. Its core and peripheral contributors are now standbys of the greater New York art and art-adjacent music scenes, drawing from a similar set of influences spanning film music, ambient, and free-improvisational styles.

Familiarities aside, there’s nothing quite like Microfibers. It bathes in the uncanny, a subtle and all-the-more destabilizing twist on the normal. As with its ambient and minimalist forebears, the album’s twin tracks consciously create a space rather than blending into the background — an oblique pushback to the anesthetizing playlist ambient that soundtracks our outer lives. While Microfibers can resemble soundtrack music in its patience, it is more filmic than a typical score would allow, with its own suggestive narrative and heady atmosphere. Tension and release, dissonance and consonance, and attack and sustain all shed their expected expressive functions. The mood is resolutely ambivalent, spaciously claustrophobic, serenely tense.

Clocking in at just over 18 minutes, “Glass of Water” creeps in on a hesitant harp arpeggio from Shelley Burgon, patiently unfolding alongside increasingly insistent background thrums and hits. The meditative quality of the Italian avant-garde is present, but the sense of repose is slightly askew, as Burgon’s microtonal plucks fold in gently alongside blocks of sonic shade and grit. Meanwhile, “Tiers” smolders with overdubbed saxophones courtesy of fellow Soap Librarian Eve Essex, splitting the difference between haunted overdubs and lockdown dread. As bell-like sounds — evocative of a forgotten herd on a far-off knoll — rise in the mix, metal-splinterings from a prepared piano jar the listener from their reverie.

The recording process laid the groundwork for its multivalent listening experience. Beginning as motifs drawn from long improvisations, the music slowly grew into a hybrid improv-composition, as the trio overlaid responses to their initial gestures using guitar, synth, and a range of other instruments to dialogue with themselves asynchronously. The result is a controlled, musical aleatoric, evoking the wistful feeling of a chance encounter; a fleeting conversation with a passerby that lingers in the memory. Despite its connection to the canon of experimental minimalism, the album as a whole conjures a contemporary feeling, one that is fraught with both tension and possibility. Microfibers contains a lot, but conceals as much as it reveals, inviting you to dwell in its liminality a little longer.

Microfibers releases on Friday, May 9, 2025 on Soap Library in vinyl LP, cassette, and digital formats, accompanied by a double-sided 20-strike matchbook. Jump in, the water’s warm – but so is the flame.

Brazilian music is widely known for samba and bossa nova, but with a landmass approximately 23 times that of Japan, the country is home to countless musical treasures that remain largely undiscovered. Alongside popular music, Brazil has a rich history of experimental music and music which could be considered ambient, many of which were ahead of their time and went unrecognized upon release.

For this selection, I’ve curated music from Brazil spanning the 1950s to the 1980s, using my own broad interpretation of the "experimental, avant-garde, and ambient" realm. From Garoto’s guitar pieces—featuring voicings so sophisticated that it’s hard to believe they were created in the early 20th century—to the wild fusion of spirituality and Afro-Brazilian percussion by Pedro Santos. Then there’s Marconi Notaro, whose music evokes the arid landscapes of northeastern Brazil, and Naná Vasconcelos, who lived in harmony with the spiritual essence of the Amazon.

These works are at once Afro-influenced, chamber-like, and rooted in rock, yet they also connect deeply with modern Brazilian popular music and jazz. While many of these tracks might be considered "B-sides" in a commercial sense, they exist on the razor’s edge between the mainstream and the avant-garde—each one a stunning piece of music.

サンバやボサノヴァで知られるブラジル音楽ですが、日本の約23倍の面積を誇るその地にはまだまだ世間的に知られていない音楽が沢山あります。ポピュラー音楽と並行して、実験的なサウンドや広い意味でのアンビエントな作品も数多く、世に出てくるのが早すぎて当時は評価されなかったような作品も多く埋もれています。今回はブラジルの50s~80sという縛りで、私の独自の広い解釈で「エクスペリメンタル・アヴァンギャルド・アンビエント」という脈略に通じる音楽を集めました。
20世紀前半に生み出されたとは信じ難いヴォイシングのGarotoのギター曲、スピリチュアルとアフロが融合したパーカッションニストPedro Santosの狂気、ブラジル北東部の砂漠地帯を連想させるMarconi Notaro、アマゾンの精神性と共に生きたNaná Vasconcelos。アフロでもあり、室内楽的でもあり、ロックでもあり、かつ現代のブラジルポピュラー音楽やジャズにも通じる。一般的にはB面的な曲たちですが、全てメインストリームと紙一重のところに存在している素晴らしい作品です。

Born in Tokyo. After graduating from high school, he moved to Brazil and spent about seven years there to research Brazilian popular music and culture. He is the first Japanese guitarist to graduate from the Choro Department of “Tatuí Conservatory of Music” in Sao Paulo State with a major in classical 7 strings guitar. While studying at the conservatory, he began producing music in genres other than Brazilian music. He has released albums from Lontano Series (Italy), Whitelabrecs (UK), La Petite Chambre(BR) and Mystery Circles (US).

作曲家・プロデューサー。95年東京生まれ。家族の影響で中学校に上がると共にレコード収集を始める。高校卒業後にギター修行のためブラジルへ渡り約7年間を現地にて過ごす。ショーロやJazz/MPBを研究しながら、日本人として初めてサンパウロ州立タトゥイ音楽院をショーロギター専攻で卒業。在学中に映画音楽作家Gui Amabisのスタジオで音楽プロダクションの基礎を学び、ブラジル音楽以外のジャンル下で音楽制作を始める。個人名義ではRohs! Records、Whitelabrecs、Mystery Circles等のアンビエント系レーベルから多数のリリースを行い、アーティストインレジデンシーやStone Music（タージ・マハル旅行団）のギタリストとして国内外ツアーへの参加、商業音楽作家としては国内外の映画やドキュメンタリー、アートインスタレーション、企業CM等への楽曲提供を行う。また興行プロデューサーとして、2024年にアーツカウンシル東京とブラジル大使館の助成の元、ブラジル人ギタリストJoão Camareroと笹久保伸のギター公演を主催。来日ブラジル人アーティストや研究者の日葡同時通訳、ディスクユニオン傘下のTh!nk Recordsにて評論や翻訳を担当するなど、幅広い分野で活動する。

At the beginning of 2025, I upgraded my live setup. I blended electronic sounds near my window at home, using the Sonicware ELZ_1 play synthesizer and Monome norns shield effect patches, with the Soma Cosmos as the main lo-fi effect.

I slightly reconstructed some of my past tracks, centering on bubbly, percussive synth sounds. New tracks are set to be released on a cassette in the summer of 2025.

One of my favorites is a track called tang sang sen, which has a soothing and chill-out vibe.

2025年頭に LIVE機材を新調しました。sonicware"ELZ_1 play"のシンセサイザーとmonome"norns shield"のエフェクトパッチをメインエフェクトsoma"cosmos"でlo-fiな電子音に自宅窓際で煮込みました。
ポコポココポコポ感じるシンセの音をメインに過去曲を少し再構築しました。新しい曲は2025年の夏以降にリリース予定のカセットに収録予定です。
癒しやチルアウトみがある炭酸泉という曲が私は気に入ってます。

Since 2023, has been consistently releasing 2–3 cassette works annually through international labels.

“Meanderings” is a mix that drifts through percussive experimentation, fractured rhythms, bold digital textures, soothing ambient + liminal, psychedelic vibes - the name being a nod to my own endlessly wandering listening habits (and the A. Song track, of course). 

It opens with a short field recording captured during a visit to my hometown on the New Jersey Shore - a cold winter November morning in the ocean air, a place I’ve always valued as one of the best to clear my head. This short audio file was simply labeled “bebey,” reminding me that I’d probably been thinking of Francis Bebey’s music during that walk. You can hear me lightly tapping and dragging on the boardwalk railing as I moved, likely inspired by the thought of his brilliant sanza (kalimba / thumb piano) work. Much of Bebey’s music has a hypnotic quality that I deeply resonate with, and "Sanza Nocturne" in particular has a special place as one of my favorite musical statements of all time. It felt right to let that energy guide the opening of this mix.

A quick note: 

The track "Beginner Race" is from the 1984 Atari arcade game Marble Madness. Playing this game in the arcade as a kid was an enormous inspiration. When I think about why I'm so attracted to esoteric music, the inspiration I got from early video games has to be up there. This game in particular - the soundtrack has always "haunted" me (in the best way possible). The only version I have found from the actual arcade game is on YouTube, which is complete with the noise (from what I guess are the chip limitations). Please note: I touched the track up slightly with some EQ and a gentle reverb that builds throughout. 

Marble Madness was the FIRST arcade game with TRUE stereo sound (previous games used monaural or simulated stereo). It ran on Atari System 1 hardware with (mainly) the Yamaha YM2151 chip. That’s part of why its soundtrack has those warm, eccentric digital FM tones that still sound exciting today.
