This is a poem I began writing in 2008. It has since been amended and refined, eventually also becoming a song. Here you hear me reciting it live, on Halloween 2022, as the rain comes down around me in Portland, Oregon, USA. Waxing about one of the dryer places on Earth, frpm one of the wettest.

This a song for all the young Irish Guys and Girls who have had to emigrate to Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Canada and the Sahara Desert, I know how you feel just wanting to back in Ireland in the Cold & The Rain. ha ha

or pop a few caps and freak some funk over beats?
We do it for ourselves to satiate needs.
After all, it's in our blood. With our cuts, hear us bleed.
Close your eyes, feel the groove, hear the words that we speak.
We must, to survive, just as some have to breathe.
Here we are. This is us. You are you. We are we.
So, why must we hide in 'reality'?

What is your 'reality'?
Is it some facade for others to see?
And has this become your identity?
And, if so, with yourself, how the fuck can you sleep?
I have no respect for the words that you speak
or how you could hide behind church or belief.
I know in your mind you're doing 'His' deeds.
But OUR God is NOT a white man full of greed.

So, come check my Reality.
I live with a wife of exquisite beauty
who stimulates my mind with each word that she speaks
and has carried and birthed us lovely children. Three.
We are both professionals and have our degrees
and understand value and living by means.
Yet somehow we struggle to pay mortgage and eat
while those who exploit keep on livin' with ease.

Excited to do another track with Tea R. Sea- this is ‘Space Face’

Pulled out the EBow for this one.  If you're not familiar, it's a little device that you hold in your pick hand and hover lightly over the string.  It generates a magnetic pulse causing the string to vibrate.  This allows for extended sustain and can produce sounds like a synth or even certain wind instruments.  

This one really seemed to bring about a meditative / introspective state of mind when hearing it back. Hope you enjoy!

Space Face - w/ Tea R. Sea

This instrumental piece is dedicated to those buried in the 6,000 year old chambered cairn known as Greadal Fhinn in the Scottish Highland peninsula of Ardnamurchan. In a remote windswept area (the most westerly on the British mainland)the cairn is said to be the burial place of the Viking chieftain Ketill Flatnefr ('flatnose') who fled Norway in 888 AD and became known locally as Caithil Fin. 
On his death the sagas relate the use of this ancient site as his last resting place. Who knows what ceremonies were performed there in his honour or the rites and rituals for the dead in the millennia prior to the demise of old 'Flatnose'....

Pic: the main stone 'cist' which remains of the cairn entrance - evidence also suggests there was once a large stone circle around the 22 metre burial site.

Leonard gazes
Out from the shadows
Peers at a world
Where he cannot be.

Dressed in an old
Natty suit
He stands four-square
In his field of dreams.

He stands there
At the water’s edge

That watery field

Leonard rests

The city centre, often busy and vibrant,  is the area of a city where commerce, entertainment, shopping, and political power are concentrated. The term is commonly used in many English-speaking countries and has direct equivalents in many other languages. However, noticeably, in the United States, the term "downtown" is commonly used to denote a city centre, and in Canada the terms "city centre" and "downtown" are used interchangeably. The first citation for "down town" or "downtown" dates to 1770, in reference to the center of Boston. Some have posited that the term "downtown" was coined in New York City, where it was in use by the 1830s to refer to the original town at the southern tip of the island of Manhattan. During the late 19th century, the term was gradually adopted by cities across the United States and Canada to refer to the historical core of the city, which was most often the same as the commercial heart of the city.  In many metropolitan areas, the city centre or downtown, is marked by a cluster of tall buildings, cultural institutions and the convergence of rail transit and bus lines.

Title: The Profiteers

What do you call Western music with a bit of a Flamenco vibe?

Is it Western Flamenco?

Picture this: Two dusty hombres beneath a starlit sky that shimmers like diamonds. Around them is a rugged and unforgiving landscape, resplendent in the glow of a silvery moon. The air is arid, infused with the scent of sagebrush and sand.

One begins to tap a worn leather boot on the parched ground. The boot is speckled with desert dust and cow shit. The rhythm is shaky at first, but after a while it grows in confidence and tempo, punching through the gentle breeze that whispers through the desert, chasing around the cacti to awaken the nocturnal animals from their daytime slumber. His face is etched with the stories of countless adventures and in his hands he holds the only female who’ll let him touch her: Maybelline, his trusty guitar.

The hombre’s name is Chris and he’s from Bradford, but these details have no relevance here. Something stirs deep within his soul as he begins to strum: A primordial rhythm born in ancient times. He hums. The music is slow and ponderous at first. He appears distracted, lost in thought. Perhaps he is connecting with some ethereal plane that only he can see? We may never know.

A lone coyote's haunting call echoes in the distance, harmonizing with the soft strumming. It is as if the desert itself is joining in with the symphony. Gradually the hombre returns from his reverie. One can only imagine the places he has been, the things he has seen.

“Eh up.”

And so the latest collaboration took shape and turned into the song I niftily named “The Profiteers”. It’s an instrumental with a kick like a Spanish mule. Chris came up with the original idea and I arranged it. It’s all based around his vibrant guitar part.

Is this Western Flamenco?

It probably is!
