Some of our art is made on computers, some of it is made by hand. We are particularly interested in that gray area in between where you cant really tell. All of what we create here is one work laid out in segments, all connected. The Mystic Tape Deck universe is vast and explores all manner of adding meaning to our lives, while pondering meaninglessness.

This band evolved from the basement underground art rock scene in Boise Idaho in the late 1990's. Way, way underground. We played a lot of shows around town then. Other than the occasional coffee shop show (Big City and Dreamwalker RIP)- mostly at shows we'd put on ourselves or at friends' houses and garages.

We come from the OG psychedelic scene in Boise, many noteworthy bands came about among us and from our own midst. It was all a crazy mess of freaks. At one time we ran a renegade underground art gallery in our adjoining apartments on 23rd street. Wild times that eventually evolved to wilder times, which then somehow dried up and all but blew away. We all went different directions after this, but the two primary members were always songwriter and multi-instrumentalist PS Perkins, and drummer/multi-instrumentalist R Thomas. Other than that band membership was a bit of a rotating cast. If I remember who played what on what songs I will try to get that added but as I said, it was a mixed bag so often hard to tell after so much time has passed.

Never had any kind of "official" release, but did produce limited quantities of cassette releases and a self-released cd titled "From Beneath The Hollow Earth."

We are sharing this music now, nearly 20 years later.  Hope you enjoy it. WE have boxes and boxes of weird stuff we did during this time, and we hope to start digitizing what we can.

Most songs were recorded on a tascam 388 reel to reel console 8 track machine and in most cases mixed to cassette.

Welcome to The Pleasant Company, a subsidiary of Mystic Tape Deck where everything is pleasant and nothing is ever wrong.

We make soundscapes and gobs of wonderful noise.

In our long history together communing through the Mystic Tape Deck, we have recorded tons and tons of ooey-gooey-experimental-goop in addition to our more structured musical forays. This is the place where we will share that material from across the oxide layer.
Put on your heavy atmosphere gear and dive in.

Most of this is two primary artists, but also a rotating cast of invisible trans-corporeal weirdos who magically materialized in our studio at the perfect moment when the tape was running. Also, a few unsuspecting folks were captured along the way. We keep them all in elaborately adorned cages, but it is a pleasant 72 degrees all of the time.

I create seamless fusions of just about everything. All visceral, atmospheric and psychedelic with hidden depths upon closer inspection. The flow is also important. It exists on a continuum with micro-variations and subtle evolutions along the way.
The music can range from low down heavy darkness to softer and more positive, higher-vibrational new age. Yet even at it’s most crushing and industrial never succumbing to nihilism and instead feeling warm and inviting.
Very often humorous (in the form of deliberate cinematic pastiches), freaky and surreal. Inspired by dystopian sci-fi. Retro-futuristic.
I often wear my influences on my sleeve like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream but at my core I’m still self-referential with my sound. It operates at my own personal frequency.
