Sometimes I wake up in a different bed, in a different city, at a different time. Everything around me is new and there is excitement about all the possibilities. But there’s also a bit of anxiety and maybe even dread. My anchor is gone, and I am drifting with the current, afloat among the unfamiliar waters. This is when I turn back towards music. Music that makes me feel like I am safe, serene and cosy. Music that I often call my home. This is precisely what I hear in the soft piano keys of the Norwegian pianist and composer Øystein Skar, who has announced his upcoming debut album, titled Hem. I may not know him as a person, and yet his playing makes me calm. I may not truly know his story, and yet his story’s somehow mine. And while I navigate the stormy weather, this ray of sunshine points the way. In these turbulent and truly anxious times, I turn back towards home. I turn back towards music.

Composed during winter’s embrace in his woodland home outside Oslo (I imagine a hushed sanctuary of a snow-draped retreat), the piece embodies the album’s central theme of homecoming – not merely to a physical place, but to essential truths long carried within. In its patient build and emotional resolution, “Levva” invites listeners into the intimate geography of Skar’s personal mindspace. The piece stands as testimony to what becomes possible when an artist, after years of outward exploration, turns the compass needle toward the territories of the heart.

"Levva, meaning “to live well,” is a longer, more experimental track blending classical, improvisational, and electronic music. Anchored by a synth arpeggiation and a piano melody, the piece has two parts with the second evolving into an expansive, percussive, and dreamy landscape created with an array of synths. Billow Observatory – the trans-atlantic duo consisting of Detroit's Jason Kolb (Auburn Lull) and Danish producer Jonas Munk (Manual) – are back with a follow-up to the their debut album from 2012. 

”II: Plains/Patterns” departs from the first LP’s amorphous ambient haze with a more rigid, albeit subtle, underpinning of rhythm and pulse. The duo’s obsession with “place and space” comes clearly into focus with an album that draws deeply from Munk and Kolb’s individual proximity to the geographically distant, but oddly similar, sounds of Germany and Michigan, past and present. 

 Traces of shoegaze, modern minimal electronica, and kosmische appear on every track, but are mutated into something mysterious and new. ”Pulsus”, for example, opens the album with a driving teutonic stutter and washes of serene guitar loops that are punctuated by bursts of filtered synth patterns; a combination that seamlessly bridges the gaps between disparate genres and periods of time. 

 Centerpiece, ”Plains”, expands the ambient formula into an inspired epic in three parts, where swells of processed guitars, distant voices and faint echoes of Detroit techno are weaved together to form a kaleidoscopic whole. And tracks such as ”Vex” and ”Plum” seem to pay as much homage to Slowdive and Eno's Harold Budd collaborations as to the modern minimalism from Cologne or Berlin.

THESIS DRIVE2 - JANUARY - Julia Gjertsen - Skog (edit)

The debut studio album from London based Robin Schlochtermeier is yet another example of introducing a new mighty voice that stands out among a populated modern classical, ambient, and minimal scenes, even as that voice is not exactly new to music. Although Spectral is the very first solo release from this Anglo-German composer, Schlochtermeier has scored numerous award-winning documentaries, television series, and films. And once you hear the beautiful soundscaping of his music, you’ll understand how this experience has played into this brand new work. But it does feel that Robin has retained something a lot more special to create the soundtrack for the film behind his eyelids, as the pieces on his upcoming album for Denovali unequivocally demonstrate. This is more than cinematic music, as the slow and growing tension throughout the progression of his music, melds with melancholy, doubt and beauty, which immediately stops the listener for a pause to hear more. There are many gorgeous arrangements on this 9-track release, which features an upright piano from the 50s and only a few extra layers of textural sounds to keep the palette very limited to explore the available space, but I have picked my favourite piece, titled “Foghorn”, for an exclusive premiere on Headphone Commute, as its particular atmospheric quality captures the feelings I get from his sound.

As my daughter’s consciousness was forming, I would often catch an amazed look on her face or notice that she stopped and stared at some small detail in her environment. This would frequently evoke a profound sense of mystery in me, and I grew curious as to what was causing her to react in such ways. Seeing the world through my daughter’s eyes reminded me of the experiences the world can produce in our minds when we are open, receptive and boundary-less."
