Disquiet Junto Project 0436: Planetary Headspace

Here I used the provided recording of a dripping downspout. Using Bitwig's FX grid, I used this recording unaltered to provide the rhythm and tempo. With the grid, I could trigger a few different oscillators based  on when the drip sound crossed a loudness threshold.  I split the signal and passed each though different gate lengths, this dictated the frequency with which each gate could trigger a new note. Notes were pulled from a pool of choices, mostly randomly, in F minor.

Shepard Techno (disquiet0582)

Evening, Morning? I recorded using a TASCAM in a basement with an annoying rolling chair over me, I needed a smoke, great Junto time, I recorded getting the cigarette, walking outside, getting Sour Patch Kids from a bowl, smoking and taking Charlie the Chihuahua to the bathroom. I selected the rolling chair, cause it has been driving me bonkers with multiple office chairs rolling above. I took close mouth samples while chewing slowly. I then took the sample and ran it thru Live with the Push slicing it up in sampler in the section with the rolling boosted, played and looped thru 16 bars. I then layered this with the original recording of a cigarette trip to the front porch and back. The windows in all spaces were open.

Wolfin Sour Kids in Denver Disquiet0436

I woke up early and saw this weeks brief. The normal sounds of morning, birdsong and occasional traffic, a nearby train, the occasional buzzing of bees in the garden.  Talking from a nearby garden. Life is all around us even in a time of lockdown (which is becoming less and less adhered to as the government talks of lifting restrictions here in the UK)

I recorded this using my trusty Zoom H4N with wide angle internal mics.

Disquiet0436 7am Friday Morning

Recording the sounds outside the top floor window at 7AM on Friday morning with my DR-05X - minimal processing (EQing only). Mainly birdsong, light distant traffic, and some faraway sounds of the rubbish bins being collected.

The Assignment: Share a recording of your local environment to create a communal soundscape.

Process: recorded the inner yard of the building I live in, which is a classic Berlin style building with many apartments, a front house, two side houses and a garden house that are around a yard, featuring a tree and stuff. Therefore I hear many noises of my neighbors, when they are on the phone, having guests, having loud music, baby cries, etc. The part I recorded is that time of the day one of my neighbors is playing on their piano. Although I am easily annoyed by noises, the piano playing usually doesn't annoy me. I found the ending of the recording also interesting, because someone is whistling the last recognized melody and the birds seem to be on it, too. 
Earlier I was indoors doing something but all windows were open, I was listening to the other tracks and it was really interesting to have one kind of birdsong-backyard recording out of my speakers and the other one coming from the yard. So this kind of already fulfilled the collaborating artist's aim I guess :)

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
