The original title of the song was supposed to be Che matenata 'e sole, but the composer Salve D'Esposito thought that, after the success of Me so 'mbriacato 'e sole, it would be better to abandon that subject. Thus it was that, also thanks to the inspiration provided by a personal episode (the author Tito Manlio had had a small altercation with his wife, which was then followed by peace) Na matenata 'e sole became Anema e core.

Santa Lucia luntana is dedicated to the many Neapolitan emigrants who left from the port of Naples for distant lands (almost always for the Americas); the words of the song are inspired by the feelings they felt when moving away from the mainland, staring at the picturesque panorama of the village of Santa Lucia, the last glimpse of their land that they could see, increasingly smaller, on the horizon.
