I first gave to “Seeing Through Shadows” @Ricardo Villalobos. He was the only guy who was able to play crazy stuff. Please keep in mind, that this sound was not big at that time, and Ricardo was really far out. 

We were at the Dance Valley Festival, playing the Circoloco stage. Ricardo came to me during his set and said: “I’m going to play your track! Watch @Richie Hawtin’s face!“ He played the tune, and after first chords I saw Rich go to Ricardo. I didn’t really know him at that time. I just saw Ricardo laughing and pointing at me.

Loco Dice - Seeing Through Shadows (Minus)

A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

With the deeper side of techno invading dancefloors all over, the underground scene is witness to an influx of really creative, exciting artists. 12 Tones (Get Physical, Madtech) are a name that is working it’s way to the forefront of that movement.

Noema translates as the object of a thought or perception, and the dreamy landscape of the edit echoes the sentiment to give us a dark but grooving timebomb. V I V I D’s remix kicks up the acid, and adds a wonderful off-the-wall arpeggio to break up the middle. 

The second half of the EP amps up the deep. Noesis (or to perceive) concentrates on subtle thoughts and lots of feeling to create some top quality techno. The remix by Rolbac and Etchar is a sublime production, maintaining the mood, but adding a lot of personal touches and ad-libs to the original.

Weighing in with his first entrance on the Nastiest and Funkiest label on the West Side of the UK, Arise arrives in style with a 5 track EP intent on straight talking music.  Each track showcases the widespread tastes of this exciting Italian producer as he follows up his releases on King Street Records, Prison Entertainment and Dear Deer accompanied by some fine vocals from Hermanifezt.

Title track, Punk Detonator is a special kind of beast, a one of a kind track that can be played anytime, anywhere and by connoisseurs of any kind of club night. A techno-acid-disco hybrid that steals from the past to give to the future, this one will make it’s way into your record bag and stay there long after all the fads have faded and fashions have flashed by. It’s a keeper.

The rest of the EP is all about changing it up. ’Something’ ushers in the disco mood, a smooth, subtly charged kick-clapper refined with a sexy throaty vocal that guides us gently into the darkness, and a bassline that smashes right through the dancefloor for sunset or sunrise. We Have To Work, is pure Deep House, all about the groove and a hooky, prime vocal that sits perfectly on the rhythm and music that allows you to close your eyes and smile. 

Penultimate entry, Big Train is a prime chunk of choo-choo funk, dynamite vocals, and a steady driving groove push the track further along it’s ’tracks’ to a peak time destination and We Never Die finishes with some delicious nu disco, highlighting and cementing the delirious flexibility and furious dancefloor focus of this exciting producer

Crosstown Rebels and Bedrock Records artists, Josh Dupont and Dan Snow AKA Extended Play,  are no strangers to putting out quality music into the techno stratosphere. Having gotten together in 2013, they’ve already charted high in both the Techno and Deep House charts on Beatport, and remixed, John Digweed & Nick Muir vs Pig & Dan to name a few. 

Their first EP on NastyFunk, Queen Bee, is an offering absolutely loaded with that airy, techno-house fusion that they’ve come to be recognised for. The title track merges sensual dreamspace vibes with a driving undercurrent that blend together, offering a spiritually intergalactic journey to the next plain amidst a thumping beat.

Next up on Motek we welcome V i v i d & Savvas who have teamed up for their ‘Primitive Spirit’ EP. Three tracks full of drive and rhythm through Tech to Techno. ‘Sea Of Clouds’, ‘Isle Of Farr’ and ‘Silver Tongue’ move through changing atmospheric impact, Sea Of Clouds, the slower of the three, grooves with smooth airy string pads, soft brassy lead textures and distant vocal moment. Isle Of Farr steps up in weight with a more chunky bass section and analogue leads. Depth is found in the live textures, washed in reverb, from acoustic guitar to oriental flutes. The final original track, Silver Tongue, takes on the darkest feel of the originals. Moody pad sounds under industrial hits add the foundations for a hypnotic repeating bell lead to roll along. This release comes with three remixes from Marc Poppcke, Wayne Duggan and Rolbac. Marc Poppcke has kept the same mood of Sea Of Clouds with airy soft pad voicing, whilst adding a rolling and ever developing intelligent arrangement. More use of the vocal parts and repartition within synth elements help fill the production alongside pulsing lead sections. Wayne Duggan has put his stamp on Isle Of Farr. Sharp ride hits and fast moving hats and shakers give the track a relentless drive all held together with a strong drone bass pad. The track is developed and raised with string pads heightening the tension. Finally Silver Tongue has been remixed by Rolbac. In real contrast to the original, Rolbac has taken the track into a more House direction. The bass line is doing the main part of the work by taking on the main melodic part whilst adding chunky groove features. Experimentation in glitchy lead effects bring strong focal points as the track develops
