Description: A Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) will try to alert its partner to potential predators when raising its offspring; such behaviours are known as off-nesting. When birds emit distraction calls or produce distraction displays, it often means a nest of young or fledged young are present nearby.

The European fire-bellied toad is, in fact, a frog. (No fire, either.) However, this is more than compensated by its satisfyingly fun-to-say Latin name: Bombina bombina. They also produce antimicrobial peptides in their skin secretions – the even more fun-to-say ‘bombinins’. 

Native to eastern mainland Europe – recorded here in the protected land of Poland’s Barycz Valley Landscape Park – they use their internal vocal sacs to produce their “whoop” call: the mournful, slow-motion honk immortalized here. Imagine the sound that clowns might make when they cry and you won’t be far off.

Depuis quelques années, les deux espèces partagent leur espace. La Rainette méridionale a rejoint sa proche parente, la Rainette verte. Ici dans une ambiance d'oiseaux et avec quelques chants de la Grenouille des Balkans. Cette dernière a été introduite localement dans la cadre du commerce des cuisses de grenouilles. Il semblerait que la Rainette méridionale ait aussi bénéficié d'un coup de pouce humain pour monter au nord.

L'Oedicnème criard arrive. Retour d'Afrique vers ses quartiers de printemps et d'été, venant se reproduire dans les dernières terres que l'Homme consent à lui octroyer. En Dordogne, ce "Courlis" de terre crie dans la frénésie du voyage, dans l'excitation de la reproduction.

The European Stone Curlew is coming. Return from Africa to its spring and summer quarters, coming to reproduce in the last lands that Man agrees to grant it. In the Dordogne, this bird cries in the frenzy of the journey, in the excitement of reproduction.
