For this haiku  I created a more classical piece for piano quintet (piano + string quartet). I imagined more turbulent floodwaters eventually receding into more calming sounds, with the sustained strings being the water and the more and more random high piano notes being the eucalypt leaves reflecting on the water.

Chasing Echoes (naviarhaiku187)

As a child I used to visit cousins in Naranderra, then a far-away place of dirt roads, bare-footed kids and swimming in the Murrumbidgee River, which floods regularly and spectacularly.

One of the abiding memories of those visits was swimming in a smaller tributary of the river, looking up and seeing the bones of cattle still lodged high in the gum trees that bordered the river, a legacy of recent floods and an indicator of just how high the floodwaters could rise in a short time.
