moonbeams flickering through the fog.... having driven a two hour drive through swathes of dense vision inhibiting fog after midnight just recently this is something of the feeling and mood I imagined or experienced...

I tried to come up with an sound I could relate to fishes which ended up being an arpeggiated piano line. I wanted a sound that reminded me of the moon which ended up being something in the bass. Finally I wanted a river sound which ended up being some band passed noise.

I hope the allusions are self-evident and although at its core it's based on Chopin's Waltz No 9 in Ab (Op. 69 No. 1), I thought it had elements of early 20th-century impressionist music so I've invented the tag "electro-impressionism" to describe it :)

Moonbeams Like Fishes Swim Over The River (NaviarHaiku385)

This piece was inspired by the Naviar Haiku challenge:  https://www.naviarrecords.com/2021/05/19/naviarhaiku385-moonbeams/

The work unfolds as a long slow series of "breaths", which are chords built out of sine waves which are stacked along the harmonic series: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8.  The chords are tuned in pure Pythagorean intervals, and the relationship between successive chords are as well.  All the notes shimmer with varying rates and depths of tremolo, the delays between the chords notes and the chords vary.  Each "breath" moves slowly from left to right in the listening space, and are specially processed to produce a sense of distance.
The water sounds are multiple layers of a live recording I just made this past weekend while hiking in the coastal redwood forests of far-northern California.
