RANDOM SOUL RECORDINGS PODCAST - JANUARY 2022

We return this week with another dose of underground to ease you into another week of... life? 

I have to tell you, I think the pandemic really gave a creative kick to so many producers out there who just keep putting out amazing music week after week. I was def shaking my derriere as I put this episode together.

I like to consider myself as someone who knows underground music and of the great artists from the scene but one that I discovered recently, @reagangrey, completely flew under my radar. Boy, was I missing something from this fellow Canadian producer. All of the tracks she has produced or remixed are pure fire. I had to include her work in this episode and more is coming as she has an amazing catalogue. Thank you @traxsource for the introduction. Also, a throw back from the best thing that has come out of Russia since Vodka, @alex_hook. Even a timeless interpretation from the maestro himself, @marques-wyatt.

I realized there was tons of music from previous episodes that I never played even if I had planned to. Prob cause they didn't fit, were the wrong key from what I was playing, or I just forgot about them. So many tracks at the end of each show's playlist that just never made it. I threw some of those in here such as some amazing remixes of RÜFÜS to a fantastic bootleg of Jessie Ware.

The NDYD Radio Show EP239

It was a big weekend here in Los Angeles as the Super Bowl was hosted in the city and our local LA RAMS were in it. Oh, and we also WON! I'm not the biggest football fan but it was fun to watch and root for our town. Honestly, like a lot of other non football fans, I was there for one thing: to watch that halftime show. All I can say is WOW! What performance by Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, and 50cent. I felt like a high school girl from the 90s watching her favorite boy band on TV. For real, the best halftime show ever (and I also count in there Prince's 2007 performance). It was truly amazing to see those performers on stage right there in Inglewood. It was just magic. I've replayed the show a couple of times since yesterday on Youtube.

I know I said last week that I would have a special guest this week but the Super Bowl threw a monkey wrench into that. I was lucky that I recorded this show earlier this week to have something today. Everyone in town who had plans this weekend was delayed somehow. So next week, I promise to have that guest mix as things get back to normal. Thank you for understanding and enjoy this set dedicated to our LA RAMs :)

To give you a preview of the night I went very soulful with this episode and very "Migsie". I mean, I've been trying to jack his style and skills behind the decks for over 20 years now :)

I am happy also that the person who is taking us across the 250th milestone line is  someone who is becoming a regular on the show, my friend Pepper (@pepper_playhouse). She is very in tune with what the show has always been about from the beginning and this set captures that spirit no doubt. I mean Pepper had me hooked as soon as I heard the first bars of the classic 'Sugarman'  from Rodriguez(the first track)and just took me on a ride from there.

Ricardo Torres, a West Coast DJ, is known for blending deep, soulful house and disco with a smooth, sultry West Coast vibe. His music is crafted for true dance music enthusiasts, delivering uplifting, groovy, and sexy experiences rooted in the underground scene.

Ricardo’s DJ journey began in 1987 at a college radio station in Montreal, Canada, where he initially spun industrial electronic music. By 1988, he was introduced to Chicago House and was captivated by its fresh energy, changing his musical direction. In 1995, he moved to Los Angeles, where the city’s sun-drenched, soulful vibe and influences from DJs like Jay-J, Marques Wyatt, Julius Papp, Mark Farina, and Miguel Migs drew him toward the deeper West Coast sound.

In 2000, Ricardo pioneered sharing his mixes online, a bold and innovative step that garnered him international recognition. This exposure led to global performances and opportunities, while he also became a syndicated radio host on satellite and online platforms.

Around 2016 Ricardo partnered with Germany’s Nu Disco Your Disco (NDYD), a leading advocate for the Nu Disco genre. Their collaboration birthed the NDYD Radio Show, which Ricardo hosts weekly, showcasing top global talent and steadily growing a loyal listener base. For Ricardo, Nu Disco offers a modern bridge for the soulful West Coast vibe to resonate with newer generations.

While underground music trends have evolved over the decades, Ricardo’s passion remains unwavering: playing music that inspires people to get up, dance, and celebrate the timeless groove of house music.
