Maison Musique Mixtape Edition No. 11 - Kris Santiago

Back, Jack, do it Again - Yes, back with my first program of the year. But before that, I would like to give props and a HUGE thank you to Yissel @soundsbyyissel for taking over the decks last week with the first show of the year and also being the first guest of 2022. She went beyond the call of duty to give the program a proper kick start. Her set and selection is everything that the show is about and what I’ve been trying to build on for the last 7 years. This was Yissel’s second guest spot on the program as a guest and I will definitely not gonna let so much time pass under the bridge for her next appearance. Speaking of last week's guest, I had a nice convo with her about music and how she approaches it. She said something that really stuck with me. A set, or mix, is really telling a story. Most of the time it’s our personal story and we have the ability to control the narrative which is very empowering and healing.

Keeping that in mind it’s how I approached this week’s show. I’ve been listening to different takes/edits on tracks that had a significance during my teenage years. These songs definitely tell part of my story, such as the break ups (hey, I can’t help it I’m a libra), the song that was playing the first time I went to a club underage using fake IDs (hint: it was by Billy Ocean), a track from the Cure that used to haunt me in high school, and many more cuts that were around before my time but that I used to love. There is even a song from my favorite TV show of the time. These are mainly rock and disco songs with a modern take. Hence, the Yacht Rock/ Disco edition. This is volume 1 cause I am hoping to do more if people dig it. If you also grew up around the time I did and these songs bring back any memories let me know. Would love to hear about it. Last week's guest mix by Pepper totally inspired me to do a volume 2 of the Yacht Rock edition. I did promise to make another one in that style and it was due. For some reason these series are really popular with the listeners, so I oblige. Last week's track selection from our guest was so good that I couldn't just stand by and be a Pisco to her Pepper - she will get :) I had to follow the lead she left us with. Will there be a volume 3?  Maybe. But this set, like the tracks in it, won't get old or go out of style anytime soon so let's go sailing.

The NDYD Radio Show EP251 -  Yacht Rock vol 2

Continuing with the 'Yacht' series of mixes we now dip our dancing toes into the Disco realm. But this is not your parents cheesy Disco. You won't find any Funkytown or any Village People's tracks in this episode. We will leave that for your friend's wedding. Most of what makes this episode are edits of the less commercial songs from that era including some original newer songs that fall in that category. 

I originally had picked about 40 tracks that flowed very nicely for this episode but instead I decided to split it in two parts. Part 2 is already recorded and it will be EP255 next week. I will let you digest Part 1 first so you will know what to expect when it goes up. Enjoy.

The NDYD Radio Show EP254 - Yacht Disco Part 1

Part 2 of Yacht Disco is here! A tad early. That is because this weekend I will be attending the Day Trip Festival in Long Beach so I won't have time to record it then. I am actually playing on Saturday at the festival on the Shoreline Stage from 2 to 3:30 pm. Then Sunday I will be there all day to see and hear the headliners of that day.

I want to thank @djmartintaylor for giving us another great guest mix last week which actually gave me a chance to re-work part 2 of Yacht Disco. It was already recorded but during the week I got my hands on new music that was appropriate for it and it gave me the chance to extend it. I don't think you will mind :)

The NDYD Radio Show EP256 - Yacht Disco Part 2

I felt it was time to slow things down again and started a new series in the Yacht category. We now have Yacht Rock, Yacht Disco, and the new addition Yacht Lounge. It's not the first time I do a downtempo episode but I've done enough that it needs its own category. This show reminded me and made me feel nostalgic of 2015-16 when I use to travel to the south of  France and to Spain to play this style of music on fancy Yachts and bars/clubs by the beach as the sun was setting. Good times!

Fran Deeper - DISCO TEAM DESERT - Spa In Disco October Mix

Back by popular demand, the Yacht Series (specifically Yacht Lounge). If you went to high school in the 90s and you got your heart broken there for the first time then I can almost guarantee that you had the first song in this mix on repeat in your Discman. I know I did. I just couldn't stop listening to Mazzy Star. The singer of the duo, Hope Sandoval, was one of my biggest crush from those years and it's why she is on the cover. She was so beautiful and talented. The song 'Fade Into You' was engraved in my head and if CDs could be worn out like vinyl The Mazzy Star's second album, which had that song, would have been a victim of it. Besides that timeless gem there are 15 more tracks/edits such as The Eagles, Brian Ferry, Cowboy Junkies, Soul 2 Soul, and many others that should take you back to nostalgia land of the late 80s early 90s. A really nice balance of Soul, Rock and Disco that never goes over 100 bpm. Let's go sailing!

The NDYD Radio Show  EP278 - Yacht Lounge vol 2

Here it is. The last NDYD Radio Show for the year. Next weekend is Christmas and the weekend after NYD so the show will be taking a break until 2023. Not to worry though because you will get your money’s worth with EP 281. This episode clock’s in at 3 hours (!) so plenty of new music to keep you grooving til New Year’s when I am planning to return with a best of 2022 episode. Heck, this episode is good to go for your personal NYE House party because it’s pack with feel good Disco. I’m not talking about cheesy Disco that you hear at your friend’s wedding but proper House Disco that takes over you and guides you to the dance floor. This is not a coincidence because after attending the amazing LA performance from Dimitri from Paris last weekend in DTLA I’ve been dying to do a full proper Disco set for the show and that is what EP281 delivers. Amazing modern Disco artists like The Shapeshifters, Louie Vega, Dr Packer, David Morales, my evil twin Mark Brickman, and so many more make an appearance in the last show of the year.  

Another reason why this episode is heavily Disco influenced is because of an event I am playing for on NYD called DISKO BRUNCH here in Hollywood on January 1. I have the honor to share the decks with an amazing roster of artists like Tube & Berger, Colette, Mark London, Big Cee and more. It’s an NYD brunch so there will be food, drinks and DISKO!

It is time once again to put on the breaks and slow things down a bit with a brand new Yacht Lounge. To be honest, I'm doing this for myself as I needed to chill cause for the last 3 weeks (and weekends) I've been non stop at work. Recording this set which is a mix of lounge, jazz, hip hop, and deep house made me relax and is actually helping me with my tasks while I listen to it in the background.

This set is dedicated to all the artists that work on their art every day & evening, into the night, and weekends just to meet the deadlines. Put this on and get it done. Remember, art is never finished - just abandoned when it's good enough.

The music of West Coast DJ, Ricardo Torres can best be described as a blend of deep, soulful house, and disco inflected with the particular sound of the west coast vibe, sultry and smooth. He plays the music that  heads love to dance to; confident that when the music flows from hands that loves the underground it can be an uplifting, groovy and sexy experience.

Ricardo has been on a quest to achieve that perfect mix ever since his first chance encounter at the turntables, in 1987 at his college radio station in Montreal, Canada. His first 12" records were from the Industrial Electronic Music of that time.  Shortly thereafter in 1988, he was first introduced to House Music. Ricardo quickly changed his direction and followed the early days of Chicago House.  He moved towards this style of music since he found it to have a new and unfamiliar energy within itself.

In 1995 Ricardo, moved to Los Angeles, a city basking in sunrays and radiating the good vibes he himself perpetuated. And here, Ricardo discovered the funky, soulfulness of the west coast sound.  Many of his early heroes such as Jay-J, Marques Wyatt, Julius Papp, Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, and others gave him the desire to gravitate towards this deeper, more soulful West Coast style.

While still a local Los Angeles DJ, Ricardo - inspired by his love for this genre-decided early on in the year 2000 to post his mixes online to share with the world. This was fairly new and innovative at the time. This act of sharing his musical vision without prejudice or limitations caused him to be sought after to play his brand of house music in cities all over the world. He continues to offer up his masterful mixes, as host of syndicated radio shows online as well as on satellite radio in the USA.

Within the recent past Ricardo joined forces with Nu Disco Your Disco out of Germany for representation and affiliation. This modern Nu Disco sound, to him, is the perfect way to bring that West COast vibe into the future and the new generation. Since NDYD has been a pioneer in bringing the Nu Disco genre to the masses in Europe he felt that they would be the perfect partner for doing the same in North America with their established brand. Hence, the syndicated NDYD Radio Show was born.  The show has been on the air for over a year now and besides Ricardo hosting and DJing it every week, some of the best talent in the industry and from all over the planet have been guest DJs and taken over the show. The loyal following keeps growing episode after episode. 

Underground music trends and styles have changed since Ricardo played his first vinyl record all those years ago but what hasn't changed is that he just loves playing music that inspires the heads to get up and dance!
