It was during a festival in Mettmann (Germany), when I heard "Koyunbaba"  the very first time. 25 years ago, played by David Russell. Excited and totally in it, I started to practise immediately. Then, I wrote a letter to Carlo Domeniconi, asking him for some background informations about this composition. And, only few days later, I got a handwritten letter from him!  In two pages he described the different meanings of "Koyunbaba". A landscape in Turkey with a mysterious cliff. But also the name of a holy monk who lived there in the 15th century, of whom is claimed, that he still appears from time to time in this region... 
Mainly, this music would be a strong experience of nature, he wrote. And I agree.

Funny, to read this letter today. Because-, obviously quite unaware of the enourmous success this piece should have only few years later in the guitar world-, Mr. Domeniconi wrote me, that he never heard "Koyunbaba" played by any guitarist apart from himself. Actually he seemed to be really surprised, that it was played at all...
During the following years, I played "Koyunbaba" during concerts, at festivals and in masterclasses so often, that I probably contributed a bit more than a little to the spreading of "Koyunbaba". At least I still would feel honored, if I did so.

Playing "Koyunbaba" in a concert always was a special, sometimes almost mystical experience in reaching some kind of increasing "active silence" of the audience. When I performed Koyunbaba as the final piece of my program I always tried to keep the silence between the last fading tone and the applause as long as possible. One time, I reached more than a whole minute and so my audience and I had the chance to listen together to the sound  of silence. This was incredibly precious.

This is a tribute to the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach. James created this midi file in Cakewalk Express and I imported it into Reason 7.1 and allocated voices from the Ensoniq ESQ-1 Reboot FREE Reason Refill. I also added the electronic drums (which are all generated by ESQ-1 sounds).

It is a showcase of both James's compositional skills and the range of sounds from the Ensoniq ESQ-1 Reboot FREE Reason Refill. Enjoy!

The Challenge:
I have tried to utilise all of the first ten sounds I re-sampled from the ESQ-1 Cartridge VPC-1A 01-10
which are, in order, with Patch Number:

Introducing them in order wasn't really an option, as some work better than others. I transposed a few sections and experimented a bit with the bassline and the melody so that it sounded okay to me.

I really like the organ sound BEGONE in the second passage.

And the STRBAS rocks!!!

I threw KIEV & SEGULS in last as they really, really don't work well with this piece. The KICK 2 sounds nice though.

Bach is great, amazing etc. etc. If you haven't discovered him yet - Do it right now! ; ) Put his midis in a DAW and mess with them. The hours will disappear! It's great fun. Try it. It's what synthesizers were made for.

There's nearly 4 minutes worth in this piece, as I cycle through the patches, alternating voices to play each of the 3 parts. I repeated it a few times for good measure (no pun intended).

For me it gets good towards the end when the strings and bass come in. There's 7 voices playing at that point.

So why not grab yourself some FREE classic 80's Retro synthesized/programmed pianos, organs and sound effects with this Reboot - Reformatted for use with Kontakt and SFZ compatible samplers - such as Dimension Pro, Rapture and the Free Alchemy Player. I was just practicing tonight and felt like recording one of the pieces.  Beethoven's Sonata No. 14 in C# minor Op. 27 No. 2, or otherwise known as 'Quasi una fantasia' or the 'Moonlight Sonata'.  I recorded this on a Steinway D and mastered it in my mastering studio www.alpinemastering.com

This recording  was part of my very first studio production. I labeled it "affettuoso assai" and made copies on CompactCassettes, each one by hand !  During the following years I managed to sell 500 pieces during my first gigs and concerts and was enormously proud of it.
