We probably don't need to tell you who Deadbeat is. (He even did a previous RA Podcast for us, all the way back in 2007.) But if you need a refresher, he's one of the most important and revered artists in dub techno. The Canadian artist came up in the Montreal scene alongside other trailblazers like Akufen and other Canadians (think Cobblestone Jazz, Mathew Jonson, Wagon Repair, etc). His early records for ~scape are some of the most classic and influential minimal there ever was, but dub is always at the heart of his work, and runs in the veins of BLKRTZ, the prolific label he runs himself.

Sa Pa, on the other hand, sits somewhere in the ambient zone. Originally from Adelaide, he's found a powerful creative sparring partner in Deadbeat. The two released their first album together, The Mountain, earlier this year. It's the 50th release on BLKRTZ and maybe one of the most monumental records in either artist's catalogue, a triple-LP that harks back to the hypnotic, plink-plonk days of yore with the strong cross-genre underpinning that marks Deadbeat's work these days, and plenty of lovely atmospheric wiggles.

The duo's lengthy RA Podcast, taken from two different recordings at their Absurd Dub Lustre party in Berlin, mirrors the LP's sound, weaving through tracks new and old. It's full of warm, dubby vibrations and smooth transitions.

A fittingly lush mix filled with dusty, wobbly perfection from the lovely Helsinki based @suskidj this week.

I met Suski when she warmed up for me the first time I played at Post Bar in Helsinki a few years ago - a place i've returned to a few times and truely adore! Suski is a resident at the much-loved Helsinki club. I was initially drawn to her dj'ing as the set she played as a warm-up in Post Bar was a pitch-perfect and contextually divine fit for the space & time. 

This mix is a poignant follow up - diving through through the rich textures of immersive techno, and an entire journey through the world of electronica & idm with broken beats, ambience and charmingly off-kilter percussive rhythms.

Neptunian Influence Podcast, Twenty-Five | Featuring @taylorbratches

In anticipation of the third annual Neptunian Influence party during Movement in Detroit, we are delighted to present a mix by one of the DJs who will be serving up your musical brunch! Feast your ears on this Detroit-inspired soundscape for which Taylor Bratches says she put her "best electro foot forward."

A lifelong poet and dancer, her relationship to rhythm is intimate and ever-evolving. By creating dynamic sets that range from breakbeat, electro, IDM and leftfield techno to more polyrhythmic and arhythmic varieties of dance music, she seeks to curate an experience for the mover that is both embodied and transcendent, terrestrial and extraterrestrial. She curates the podcast Walking and Falling, an extension of the Chicago-based / Smartbar-affiliated collective and mentorship program for female-identifying and non-binary DJs.

Catch her at our party in Detroit this Saturday, May 25 alongside Carlos Souffront, ADAB and Leesh. On June 14, she'll debut at Smartbar alongside Powder, Kiddo & Sassmouth for Walking and Falling. 

Taylor and I met at the Walking and Falling mentorship program in October 2017 and we've been friends ever since. Cheers to our friendship and musical bond!
