Techno Mix (2017-02-11)

Techno Mix

Any of you synth freaks out there will know all about London Modular Alliance. It is the alias of a live electronic act made up of Koova, Yes Effect and Pip Williams, but is also a much loved and cult synth shop of the same name in Hackney, London. In the club, London Modular Alliance do things properly: they cook up brain frying soundtracks, on the fly, with modular synths, no laptops, and many patch cables. Exactly what will go down at any of their shows is unknown even by the men behind the machines, such is their nature, but suffice it to say they always impress. Their studio sounds are equally beguiling and have come on Brokntoys and Hypercolour, and now they make their unique entry into our mix series.  

Clocking in at just over an hour, it is a one of the most alive soundtracks we have heard: the whole thing unfolds and evolves seemingly with a life of its own. There are no joins between tracks, no jarring transitions, just a fluid fusion of electro and techno grooves coated in that raw analogue texture we all love so much. Variously prickly and kinetic, raw and freaky or more supple and seductive, it is a splendid session from some of the finest synth maestros out there.

It's the start of the third and final day of an energy-sapping festival. As a DJ, one should probably ease things into gear, right? Wrong. Midwest legend DJ Hyperactive delivered what he had emblazoned on his shirt: "Kick & Snare & Clap & Hat & Tom." Acid lines squirmed. Snares rattled. And the kicks—well, the kicks positively boomed, not least when he dropped Plastikman's "Krakpot" at the very end.

The presence of a new dark vortex is confirmed on the eighth and farthest known planet from the Sun. Lost Trax lead us to the heavy heart of Neptune’s Great Dark Spot for the one year anniversary of Neptunian Influence Podcast. 

An anonymous collective of artists, Lost Trax create raw, emotive music in the forms of deep and infectious electro, acid and techno. While the producers have their individual projects, they join forces to make a ‘Lost Track’ when inspiration strikes. “Combining acidic twisted basslines with tight Detroit electro elements,” Lost Trax consider early Detroit Techno to be a major influence in their sound. 

Since 2006, Lost Trax have released nine Singles and EPs on respected labels such as @tabernacle-records, @shipwrec and @frustratedfunk. The Saturnian System / The Sequel, recently issued on the celebrated @delsinrecords, represents a solid retrospective of the collective’s earlier work that appeared on various releases between 2006 and 2010. Lost Trax return to Delsin this spring with a new EP.  

While Lost Trax prefer to keep their identities in the shadows, they’ve performed across Europe and recently headlined @tresorberlin with a live performance. Notably, they also performed at @mosaique-space in Saint Petersburg, Russia on New Year’s Eve 2017. It goes without saying, we hope to see Lost Trax on the West Coast sooner than later!

I am so honored and excited to share a mix by one of my favorite electro acts, Lost Trax. I first learned about the mysterious producers a few years ago when I became infatuated with the opening track in an @Alienata DJ set. After some researching, I learned it was "The Saturnian System" by Lost Trax and I've been a huge fan ever since! -Whipnotiq <3

Here we find the elusive Mike Servito in his natural habitat, closing No
Way Back in Detroit 2018, always one of the highlights of 313: Return to
the Source. It has become a sort of annual tradition to have him close
the party, as he balances the light with the dark in such an effortless
way. As he played “The Climax” I remember the feeling in the crowd, it
was magic. This set is directly after Derek Plaslaiko had finished playing
and an impromptu tag team ensued. This set presented here is Mike
Servito solo, killing it as he always does.

Neptunian Influence Podcast, Twenty-Three | Featuring @whipnotiq

Neptunian Influence is celebrating two years since inception and I’m feeling cheerful about the past, present and future of this mission. I’m honored to host the incredible, heartfelt transmissions that we have so far, contributed by some of the most talented DJs and producers in the realm. The future looks *bright* (within dark vortices) as we are about to launch the official Neptunian Influence website and announce the third annual Neptunian Influence brunch during Movement in Detroit. Other endeavors include brining Neptunian Influence to local FM airwaves and a collaborative monthly residency in Long Beach, California. As for the podcast, we have some very fine musically-inclined individuals lined up to deliver mixes in the months to come. You won’t be disappointed! 

Here is Neptunian Influence’s two-year transmission made with love, passion and compassion by yours truly. Take one was smoother, but take two was riskier, so naturally I went with take two :) I’m definitely enjoying my new Ortofon needles. I’ve been trying not to buy records lately, only because I can’t really afford them, but I couldn’t resist buying the record that I open with, “Da Sacred Symbols Of Sun And Moon” by Solomon Angelo. It is wildly, out-of-this-world good and I highly recommend. Most of the other tracks come from my favorite records of last year. All of the tracks are very special for various reasons: the feelings they vitalize; who made them; the record labels they were released on; where they were found; how they were acquired; their song meanings; their song titles. I live by the words of DJ Maaco’s “I’m In My Lane,” I dream to the sounds of “When U Wish Upon A *” by Solomon Angelo, and I worry about the future of the planet...cue “141 Gates” by DJ Overdose. I play my very favorite James Shinra track which I’ve been saving up for a couple years, and my last track is from an absolute treasure of a series by Tony Allen & Africa 70. 

Symphonic jazz fest meets cyber funk fest in the cosmos. Meet you in the Great Dark Spot.

Alexander Berg and Robin Jonsson – best known by their monikers Dorisburg (@alexanderberg) and @kalawila – have been friends for a decade but collaborators for barely a moment. What has emerged so far from this is quite something: rhythmic yet immersive, capricious yet lucid, Avancera is the electronic sound of tomorrow.

Driven to create music that combines their two unique spheres of inspiration, yet exists in a single, almost-mythical universe, Avancera demonstrates what can result when virtuoso visions collide, combine, and ultimately synchronise.

This very special Patterns of Perception 52 precedes Avancera’s world-first performance at Patterns of Perception on 28 June at OHM Berlin.

Monster (@molimonster) launched her career over 10 years ago at Poznań squat parties, DJ-ing, promoting and running DJ workshops for women in Poland and Ukraine. She’s Projekt Lab resident and a member of Oramics, a collective focusing on dismantling patriarchy in the Polish scene. Monster is currently one of the most sought after DJs in the country, known for her obsession with old school techno, acid, Chicago house… and Rihanna. This is a recording of her Unsound debut at the 2019 closing party. It's full to the brim with put your hands up in the air moments. That's the 8th day of Unsound way.

After many years of dedication in the underground electronic music scene, the multi-talented breakthrough artist had an incredibly strong one in 2019, releasing her beautiful debut album "Bed of Roses" on @darkentriesrecords, touring the world and curating an ever-growing, inspiring catalogue for her own label @naivetrax.
The @minassuspension-resident also graced us with her presence at our summer showcase in Barcelona (with @voltek and @goldenmedusa) and simply blew us away with her impeccable selection and an energetic style of mixing that left no stone unturned.

Neptunian Influence Podcast, Thirty-Three | Featuring @214_electro

To celebrate three years of Neptunian Influence, we are delighted to present a mix by an electro hero, 214. Hailing from the majestic North Bend, located outside of Seattle and treasured for being the filming location of Twin Peaks, 214’s home has been the inspiration for many of his timeless pieces of music, which in turn have influenced electro lovers around the world. The snowscape transmission that he’s provided for Neptunian Influence seems to transport you to his daily surroundings - only before an inevitable trip to outer space :)

With two full-length albums and over a dozen singles and EPs under his belt, 214’s most recent release is ‘Rex And Shuffle’ on Steffi’s @klakson-records. In March, watch out for his ‘Si View EP’ being released via Sync 24’s @cultivated-electronics. 

This mix also serves as the second part in a series highlighting artists from the Pacific Northwest. Part one was delivered by @tufseattle’s @livwutang, who recently performed alongside 214 and @dbridge_exitrecords at Seattle’s @kremwerk. 

We are incredibly honored to host a mix by one of our absolute favorite music makers. So press play to celebrate three years of NIP on 2-14 day. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to wish 214 a happy birthday, too!
