Csound

Csound work from the fall of 1998. Otis was some big dumb dog that ran up to my wife and me in front of A Taste of India in the U district. Apparently he had ran away from the people watching him. The computer music course I was taking had lots of grad students naming their compositions 3 lower case words, like "still, further, quiet." So the full name of otis is "otis (comes running, stinking)."

The synthesis techniques were homecooked granular (at the beginning, which is a few tens of thousand of note events of little sine waves), FM, additive, and my own additive technique which modulates each partial with bandlimited noise.

Il Mirto e la Rosa

sound score from lullaby, a collaboration with visual artist Keith Monda. Working through three states of mental/emotional unrest, this piece brought together Monda’s unique, beautiful photographic technique to the scale of the stage and combined with my reinterpretation of the effects used in his still photographs with custom software to video processing which changed for each movement of a three part electroacoustic composition. The piece took inspiration from Think About A Lullaby by Merle Haggard and the writings of Ramachandran.

Recording made at Oak Lake Field Station outside of Brookings, South Dakota at approximately 6:30 AM. M/S setup with Sennheiser MKH 30 + MKH 40.  Due to a broken tripod, the microphone blimp was balanced in the branches of a small tree. 

Prairie Dawn

Three pieces demonstrating VST plugins created with Rory Walsh's Cabbage, an environment for developing Csound-based instruments and audio processors. Martin Eastwood's MVerb was used on one track, otherwise all sounds heard in these pieces have been synthesized and processed by Cabbage plugins, with no samples. Most (all?)of those plugins are instruments and effects processors designed by Iain McCurdy. 
These pieces were created and rendered with Bitwig 1.2.0 (beta) for Linux, on Fedora 21 with the Planet CCRMA additions. Vast thanks to all the developers who have made such amazing software !

Section descriptors :
1. Sunday morning, waking/dreaming/waking and dreaming again.
2. Sebkha-Chott patiently teach GWAR how to tune their instruments and play simple melodies correctly.
3. An imaginary fretless bass daydreams of 50s Darmstadt stardom, then it all somewhat sadly and totally tonally fades away.


Cabbagenic

The piece is written with a single audio generator. It's a white noise wave which is filtered in many ways. It is a single note piece where all transitions are made with continuous signals.

It illustrates a moment of Satori or profound realization of the present moment. Our mind keeps us busy all the time. We should get somewhere and we should get there as fast as we could, but there is a present moment and it's always available to us. But with our busy mind it's not so easy to stay just where we are. It takes years of practice and mind training to realize this subtle state.  

The state of satori allows us to be in contact with  reality on much deeper level. With satori we can distinguish subtle patterns in the flow of events that seems to be a total mess. We can find harmony even in the white noise.
