The Mix 067: DJ Haram

The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception.

Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero."

From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before.

As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres.

Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. 

You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela"  to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual."

Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. He lets the music speak for him, with a quiet honesty that lies in decades of opening doors—creating the conditions for new sounds and scenes to flourish and carry the culture forward.

‘Grand Times Fly’ jumps out of the gates with ‘Time Flies’. J.Jaxxon pitched up R n’ Babber coos slamming abruptly into the blissed out wall of chiming syn-percussion serotonin- shooting 80s stanza of the soul that is ‘Dream Anymore’, straight into the capital R Rude Prince of Wales (RIP) St Paul’s blues edit of ‘Theme for Grand Times’. 

Jake Healy has crafted a mini Brit Donuts, inspired by the idea of faded popular unconsciousness of long buried 80s pop melodies bleeding through the cerebral cortex, fused with the buried treasures and alternate histories/ realities/ visions of 80s UK blues parties mixes. Titles ripple and repeat, demanding their presence in the mix before quickly folding through the next nexus of strip mined, screwed up memoradilia. 

Healy’s vision appears like a Footwork invented in 1985, but with a focus on a shimmering and stepping shell suit sway, rather than a turbo charged athletic skip n’ stomp. The trick is this was happening real time somewhere near, in that year, the genetic strands pulled and fused into multiple genres over time. A highlight is ‘I Think Too’, screwed Jam N’ Lewis Boogie Thonk sprinkled with tentative Glass piano spray.

Grand Times Fly gradually itself dissolves into a time stretched gestalt, after the undulating Scritti caramel persuasiveness of ‘Want Me To’, and eventually deep into the caverns of ‘Minus’ and ‘Time Never Ends’, boogie slowed down to zombie form; the final regression. Grand Times Fly goes deep to uncover Healy’s unconscious 80s safety blanket of the soul.

Richard Sen, former London graffiti artist and 30-year dance-music maverick, has played everywhere from fetish clubs to festivals worldwide. His genre-fluid sets blend disco, Italo, house, electro, breakbeat and deep techno with unmatched depth and storytelling.
Known for Bronx Dogs and Padded Cell, his music has featured in GTA IV, HBO, and remixes for LCD Soundsystem and Bryan Ferry. His compilations This Ain’t Chicago and Dream The Dream earned major acclaim, the latter winning DJ Mag’s Best British Compilation of 2023.
With a weekly show on Do!! You!!! and his 2024 album India Man, Richard continues to push culture with taste and passion.
