This song began in the dead of winter on a cold night with Josh sitting in his studio with his acoustic guitar playing along to a looper beat. He loves bossa nova music and wanted to write a song in that style. Of course, he wrote it with the Eclectic Collecive in mind. 
  Josh also came up with the bass line to the looper, but changed it once Ken weighed in with his perfectly suited drum kit. He also added the funky main percussion you hear throughout. Then JJ got involved and laid down that wonderfully melodic organ part you hear in there. Josh, having not laid down a lead guitar part yet, used JJ melodic idea for the first verse, too, because it's so strong. Mark was last to the trough, but added several really stunning parts that added a lot of depth to the whole thing. He's responsible for the horn arrangement that accompanies JJ's organ solo, as well as the horn arrangement and entire break section at the end, which he not only drumed on, but edited and inserted seamlessly, as well. He also added percussion to Ken's percussion throughout the entire song, as well. He still gets paid the same as the rest of us, though 
  This is an example of us Josh introducing an unfamiliar type of music, and it being picked up on and carried through expertly as a group unit. We all love a challenge in the EC, and this fit the bill. We hope you enjoy listening to this song as much as we enjoyed creating it.

When Uncle Bill Quit Dope

 Well Uncle Bill was my Mothers Brother, tall lanky man
But somewhere back in Uncle Bill's life, he took to sniffing cocaine
I'd find him out in the back yard, sitting against a tree.                                                                   
His eyes bugged out in a cocaine stare, And his mind in a cocaine dream.
                                                     
Well one fall day when Uncle Bill was having a cocaine fit                              
He said Louise this coke's no good and I've made up my mind to quit.
Now you take this key and I'll go upstairs and then you lock the door,                           
And Lord I swear I wont come down, till I don't want dope no more.

Well he stomped the floor and he beat the door and he moaned a mournful cry. 
When the last cocaine went through his brain we thought he'd surely die.
He yelled and he cussed and he fell on the floor and we almost gave up hope
As long as I live I wont forget when Uncle Bill quit dope.


Well for the first few hours we heard not a sound, upstairs was quiet and still.
and then all of a sudden we heard a shriek of pain from Uncle Bill.
He bounced out of bed and across the room, I heard him break a chair.
And then another scream louder than the first as he ripped out a hunk of his hair.

My Mother kissed us all that night, as brother and I lay in bed.
We wondered if poor old Uncle Bill was dying or already dead 
But all night long we listened to him as he raved pleaded and called.                
And I swear I heard his finger nails tearing the paper off the walls.   


After fourteen days and nights of hell, it grew quiet over head.
And I peered past mother, as she unlocked the door expecting to find him dead.
But to my surprise there was Uncle Bill, as shiny as a brand new dollar.
His hair was combed and his beard was gone, he'd grown two inches taller. 

In his old blue suit and his patterned shoes, he was quite a sight to see. 
The light was back in his deep blue eyes, he turned to mother and me. 
He said Louise I've been through hell and I nearly went insane.
But I finally beat the devils habit, I beat the demon cocaine.

here i am, standing, at the gates of the house of fear.
where as, a small child, i wept many a tear.
living alone upstairs, with the maid and cook below.
the news came of fathers death and they said i had to go.

                   inside these old and crumbling walls.

i go through, the front door, to face the things i hate.
sometimes you have to face your fears, before it's too late.
