"I recorded this mix in one take on a sunny Saturday afternoon in the woods of southern Vermont at the house I grew up in, surrounded by rolling green mountains & overlooking a beautiful pond. Playing music here always feels deeply comforting & familiar, especially music on the deeper, slower & more introspective side of things. I’ve recorded a lot of mixes in this setting - it really provides me with the centering focus that I sometimes need when I want to be my absolute most honest, creative self. There is no better feeling than being completely immersed in nature. Around me there are ferns that look as if they came from the time of the dinosaurs; beautifully towering birch & maple trees; bright blue dragonflies dancing across the top of the pond as dozens of trout jump for bugs in the water below; chickadees, blue jays, robins, crows singing amongst the treetops; bullfrogs calling out from amongst the rocks. Watching the wind make ripples on the water, a canoe drifting by, the sun coming in & out of the clouds & feeling this immense sense of calm that nature provides for me enhances the experience so wonderfully. I hope it can provide someone else out there with that same sense of peace that I’ve tried to capture here."

Matt is the author of The Psychedelic DJ: A Practical Guide to Therapeutic Music Curation and Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy (https://a.co/d/3Rj3G4r), a guide for facilitators and psychonauts that combines DJ techniques, counseling, music curation, and psychedelic therapy. As a seasoned DJ, mental health counselor, and psychedelic guide, his work sits at the crossroads of music, healing, and expanded consciousness.

With over 30 years of experience exploring sound and psychedelics—from pioneering New York City’s early ’90s psytrance scene to cofounding the techno/house label Railyard Recordings—Matt eventually shifted his focus from nightlife to clinical psychology. Today, he runs Integrated Psychedelics (https://integratedpsychedelics.com), a private practice dedicated to guided journeywork, preparation, and integration support for psychedelic experiences.

"Psilocybin Therapy Protocol 2: The Shadow" is the second part of a four-hour DJ mix series I've created from hundreds of live psychedelic therapy sessions. Deep Breakfast 318 ~ Matt Xavier: Psilocybin Protocol 2 (The Shadow)

Today's guest mix arrives as the perfect soundtrack to these scorching summer days that seem to stretch on endlessly, capturing the vibrant energy and laid-back vibe of the season. We welcome Vakula, a leading figure in the Ukrainian electronic music scene.

The journey began in 1998, behind the decks of a local radio station, where Vakula played drum & bass and trip-hop sets for a handful of night listeners. By 2004, he was already diving into the deep waters of dub techno, drawn not by fashion, but by a persistent inner frequency.
Soon after, Vakula moved to the capital — a city now at war — where he spent eleven formative years. The original plan was simple: earn enough money to reach a Buddhist monastery in Tibet. But life, borders, and timing had other ideas. Instead, he stayed and followed sound.
Over the years, Vakula became part of the underground scene, eventually becoming a resident at iconic clubs such as Propaganda and Zeppelin, while also playing in many of the legendary venues of that era. By 2008, music had turned into a passport, taking him across continents to places where electronic sound truly thrived.
Genre was never a boundary. Jazz, rock, hip-hop, ambient, house, techno, drum & bass — everything served the same purpose: to explore, to feel, to connect. In 2011, he returned to his small hometown and built an analog studio, carving out space to listen more deeply.
Over time, the surface of the global scene began to feel thinner, less sacred. In 2020, he stepped back from performance and immersed himself in a three-year exploration of shamanic practices — not for spectacle, but for personal insight. This inner work changed his relationship with sound, and opened up new levels of depth, stillness, and presence in his music.
By 2025, Vakula let go of the path of the spirits, realizing that some stories are not his to walk. Vakula returned, not to where he started, but to a clearer understanding of his role: to keep listening, to keep creating, and to stay honest in sound.
Through it all, Vakula remains one of the early pioneers and enduring voices in the Ukrainian electronic scene — not the mainstream one, but a world of his own: where forest replaces the city center, where meadows stand in for mindless entertainment, and where trees are steadier than fleeting friendships. His connection to Ukraine has never been about slogans. It’s a quiet, unwavering love — for the land, for the people who still feel, and for his hometown of Konotop, which lives in every frequency he shapes.

a single VCO (sawwave), CV controlled by a Doepfer A-149-1, processed through a modulated LP-filter and a VCA with a short envelope (clock for the A-149-1 is also used as gate). The output of the VCA is fed into Clouds. Pitch of Clouds is controlled by a Sample and Hold (white noise) with a slow trigger. The clock of the A-149-1 is also divided through a A-160, the /64 output is fed into Clouds' Freeze input. Texture controlled by the random CV of a A-118, Position controlled by the right output, Texture controlled by a second output of the A-149-1, all blend parameters at high level

Before it gets too boring, a sequence with Intellijel's Metropolis/Atlantis enters the stage.
The output of Atlantis is fed into a Flame FX16 (echo-rpt). Metropolis Sync output is fed into a Doepfer A-160, its /8 output is used as a gate for Elements and as a clock for a Doepfer A-155 which controls Elements' pitch.
