Mata and Grifone are a legend for the city of Messina (Sicily) to which I am very fond. Two giants who save the city through their love.
The composition dedicated to them is full of memories, of  ancient and epic atmosphere and dream.

This impro is dedicated to the memory of Franco Battiato, a great artist who left this world last week. I have known his artistic production since the 70s, in the 80s I brought some of his hits in concert with a band, in 1997 an interview with him changed my way of seeing many things, in 2009 I tried to know  this great artistic and mystical personality and then I continued to follow his art. 
Unfortunately everything ends and he too has left us to turn into fire, earth, water and air .... I invite you to listen to his thoughts in his artistic production.
May his great soul rest in peace and continue to produce its wonders.

This is my simple composition for the approaching 2022 Plano day. It is not easy for me to play piano  in this period but I have decided to share what I feel. This song is dedicated to all Ukrainian children who need to fall asleep peacefully every night, as well as ourselves. Peace for you all.

Lullaby for a child (Piano Day 2022)

In a rare moment of freedom I listened to some of my impro again; I tried to find in some parts of them the emotions that I was able to feel during their realization and ... they are all there! The same, unchanged ... I decided to take some parts and propose them to those who will have the patience to listen to them again.
Unfortunately, the phase of life we are experiencing and which has rediscovered war as a phenomenon that we thought was perhaps not current by now does not allow me to compose or improvise with serenity. So I dedicate my emotions contained in these few notes to people who at this moment are experiencing great difficulties or even lose their lives in an absurd and incomprehensible conflict in its reasons for existing.

Look far, fly away...

For Piano Day 2023 my improvisation from tonight. I had to wait until I had the right level of concentration to say something through the music. The title " an infinite journey " is the one that we all should travel during our life , in which we run , sometimes we slow down , and we should stop to think , to deepen our knowledge of ourselves and our condition .... all we should do this! The song is dedicated to Franco Battiato, a person who has already done this type of journey and has left us an immense legacy not only artistic. Happy Piano Day everyone!

An infinite journey (Piano Day 2023)

This morning a free improvisation for all of You in the hope of bringing some peace to this world on fire with negative elements.
A simple flower warmed by the spring sun and abandoned to a gentle breeze...
I would like to dedicate this improvisation to the recently deceased Japanese Master Ryuichi Sakamoto, to whom I thought while playing.

Life

20 years have passed since I went to Nepal and the memories come back vivid every now and then... all I need is a photo, a film or some music to see that magnificent land again, its majestic landscapes and its nature. 
This evening, after a long time, an improvisation through which I relived Nepal.

All men, women and children around the world, all together, breathe... and the breath comes from their souls who aspire to a better world (perhaps not all...) without abuse, hatred and destruction.. .
This is my music for PIano Day 2024: simple music that comes straight from my soul, crosses the skies, flies over the mountains and glides over the wide grassy plains... and screams peace and serenity!

The Dance of the Piano (theme and variations)

I am very fond of this theme as it was one of the Jazz standards that I studied first. I discovered that the theme of Blue Bossa was released on a record in 1963, the year of my birth. This piece has always fascinated me for its simple melody and its harmony, but by chance this morning an intimate improvisation made its way into my soul and the keys of the piano.

Sunset

A man looks at a barren and sunny countryside landscape
The gorses and lava remind him of past eras
Suddenly its appearance changes and becomes a sicilian knight of the thousand year
He now sees things in a different way
He sees that in the past it was all easier
Now he asks himself to change
He indulges in dirges persuasive
He remember that someone would sing him to sleep
He remember the great sense of serenity that preceded sleep
He understand that it is better to change

This piece of music was inspired me by the documentary of John Turturro "Rehearsal for the sicilian tragedy" ; I think is wonderful and I recommend everyone to watch it.

I must thank my dear friend Friend Veikko Viljanen (recorder and sound designer of this my live midi sequence) that employed a virtual Grand Bluethner Model One ( with some personal modification of sound)  to make this my modest  performances  giving, with a particular use of a sound environment, something ancient that for me is beautiful.
This absolutely disinterested contribution is for me an example of good collaboration between people belonging to different geographical and cultural realities.
 We need to build bridges between peoples, not  walls ....

I had not played for days, but tonight I wanted to say something ...

My thoughts were directed to the why of our lives

Why  the life, why death ...

An unpretentious improvisation ...a soothing dance of the "why"...

This is a brief medley of some of my compositions and improvisations for piano that I prefer and which contain many emotions and memories.

Another terrible tragedy for humanity today ....

The weeping of the world

When I was very young, some of my relatives from northern Italy had given me a toy train ... the part I liked most was the locomotive, with which I invented great stories, great journeys to imaginary lands ... the dreams of a child ...
An old train, its locomotive, its travels in unknown and fantastic lands, memories and dreams ....

It is not a very cheerful music, but I can not be in this period (in Italy at the moment nobody is happy ...)but anyway even in this music and at this moment there is some hint of hope.

This Improvisation was inspired by the documentary movie "Rehearsal for a Sicilian Tragedy" , with John Turturro and directed by Roman Paska.
For a slight health problem I am still and I can think and play the piano. After having revised the documentary by John Turturro and Roman Paska a few times  I could not help but sit down on the piano and improvise what you would like to hear if you wanted. 
The theme dealt with in this frantic improvisation, with a few moments in which one can take a breath, is that of the return, of the return to one's own land as it is developed in the documentary, but obviously also the desire to return, the imagination of an ideal return in which the excitement of memories prevails as they arise in the mind stimulated by everything that surrounds us or we are able to imagine, therefore a real race to remember, to as many memories as we can evoke, to the saturation of the possibilities of our mind . 
I confess that moving in the depths of the imagination while I improvised and at the same time technically confronted what I wanted to play instinctively was not easy but I can say that I was excited while I was playing and maybe it  feels this.
Well ... I talked too much!
The umpteenth improvisation dedicated to my wonderful land of origin (Sicily) which has a splendid past and to which I wish a splendid future.

A race inside the memories ( improvisation)

Dear Friends, it is useless, in my opinion,  to tell you about my state of mind and my soul in consideration of what is happening in Italy and other countries of the world. 
This impro  is dedicated to those who are fighting alone against the disease with a very heartfelt wish to heal.
 In it there is loneliness, it is true, but also some hope.
 Good luck to everyone and thanks to all the nations of our world who are helping us out.

Also this year 2020 the Piano Day  has arrived; but this year is particular  because our world is struggling and for once the battle is not of men against other men but of men against an illness. I decided to compose a simple music, made of sound but also of silence, the soundtrack of a reflection and a contrasting feeling that currently inhabits my thoughts.

Music to survive ( Piano Day 2020)

This is an impro ....wild, spontaneous....with different parts both from the rhythmic and melodic point of view. In this period of time that we are living it is easier to dig inside oneself and in fact this impro is born from the true soul of the black kite, that's why I named it the flight of the black kite.
In it, the Black Kite is confronted with the reality of flight, with the continuous changes of air currents, with the greatest heights and with peaks almost to the ground, also granting some moments of quiet flight during which to look at the panorama in front of himself but also the one inside him.
Dear Friends, it is clear that minimalism is not the piano style I like best. I don't believe in the technique as an end in itself (also because what little I learned alone cannot be called technique!) But I like to use several piano registers at the same time in the same song even if sometimes ... the piano gets out of control !!

A real improvisation in which space and time become one.
The space of a land to which one would like to return but end up not returning and the time now finished of an age that will never return.
This impro is dedicated to my great friend Luigi.

The space of one night

Remembering for me is like climbing up and down a staircase: memories await you at every step, beautiful and sad, pleasant and terrible, like life. 
As you go up or down the staircase you sometimes slow down and linger sometimes you run to reach a good memory or to escape from an unpleasant memory.

This is a  spontaneous composition  for the Piano Soundboard's "No Chord Challenge."   A piece of music had to be composed  in which no 2 notes are played together (i.e. No chords or intervals). This included left hand notes and their relation to right hand notes. 

I decided to compose a piece of music for the left hand only.
