Finally I picked up the courage to try this piece! This is a legendary piece that almost everyone knows. I think this is the only classical piece that the entire universe knows thanks to cars reversing and water dispensers everywhere :P .

Für Elise or (For Elise) was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Of course everyone knows Beethoven since he is the genius who composed and played even after he lost his hearing! This is only possible when the great could visualize the piece completely in his mind and is such a perfect virtuoso pianist, that he can mimic the sounds in the mind in reality without needing a feedback! What I feel is the biggest plus for Beethoven is that his pieces are very easily reachable by common folk. Compared to other classical giants like Bach, Choppin whos pieces arent easily appreciated, Beethoven’s style and elegance is easy appreciated by musicians and others alike.

The piece itself is a testimony for what I’ve mentioned above. Its based on A minor, with simple arpeggios on the left hand while the right plays the melody. Its such a simple piece that most people feel that its not even worth playing in a recital! But the piece has such an amazing level of expressiveness. This is a piece that can be played beautifully by one person while the other person can make it feel bland while playing the same notes. The piece also has three distinct stages, one is the recurring theme, that everyone is familiar. In between the recurring theme are two stanzas, that have very different moods. The first stanza is a very curious and very mischievous one. The second one is a stanza that emphasizes anger, and the cools down back to the recurring soft theme.

For me, this piece is one of the best compositions ever. I have to thank Valentina Lisitsa for her version of the piece which is what inspired me to try this in the first place. I hope I’ve done a reasonable amount of justice to this masterpiece and I hope you guys like it.

[Update] Made a better version on 23rd June after a lot of feedback that my tempo was waaaaay off. So I’ve slowed the piece down a little more and increased the pace of the faster sections! I’ll make a overall faster version a little later after more practice :)

The electronics are originally taken from the Huygens lander’s descent to the surface of Saturn’s moon, Titan. Atmospheric Entry was written for the studio of Lina Bahn at the University of Southern California.
