Turntables On The Hudson 15 LIVE in LA September 2013

During the lockdown of 2021 Glyn Bigga Bush decided to revisit an album, he released in 2004: BiggaBush Free. At that time he was looking for ways to break away from his regular working methods, find new grooves and styles and perhaps to draw a line under his previous work with Rockers Hi Fi.

Freevisited sees him come full circle on this concept, further developing those ideas with the benefit of more years of experience at the mixing desk and a wider range of influences to draw from. The dub effects and techniques he championed during the 90s with Rockers are still there if anything more widescreen and epic than ever before. Beats are crisper and tougher, the pads are deeper and lusher and the overall effect is of ideas taken to the next level.

Rainer is one of the members of Trüby Trio & A Forest Mighty Black and is currently producing with Marlow & Motor City Drum Ensemble for labels like Compost records and others. He did also some nice compilations for Talkin' Loud, Sonar Kollektiv & Compost Records. His event series "Root Down" in his hometown Freiburg is runnin' over 17 years now! He played there with some of the greatest artists like Peter Kruder, Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Theo Parrish, Laurent Garnier and others.

This week’s guest artist, Funkanizer (aka Mike Pal), comes to us all the way from Greece. Mike’s first foray into music was as a bass player and for the last three years he has been making his mark on the international Ghetto Funk scene from his native Athens. His latest EP, Groove Gigolos a co-production with S Strong on Scour Records, has been a huge success. And if you scour the Internet for quality bass driven music like we do, then you know Mike’s work is supported by some of the best bass music blogs around including Ghetto Funk (Spinforth’s Scour), HongKongPingPong and Free Breaks Blog just to name a few. For his appearance in The Armory this week, Mike has all of the four major food groups well represented (ghetto funk, glitch hop, breakbeat and drum and bass) in this fabulous 55-minute mix set. Nickodemus is a traveler at heart—a connector of worlds, scenes, and people since the mid-90s. Over his extensive career as a touring DJ and producer, including 5 albums and canonical tunes like “My Swing es Tropical” and “Cleopatra in New York”, he’s helped pave the way for an inimitable mix of global fusion and the heavy beats we yearn for in the club. His music has long thrived on the close relationships and mutual respect of friends he’s built across the continents, felt through the worldly potions he cooks up in the studio, and spanning electronic sounds rooted in Latin, African, and Eastern instrumentation. His latest album, A Long Engagement, serves as a culmination of the inspirations he’s absorbed and remains rooted in his life as native New Yorker and the city’s nostalgic energy. 

Nickodemus’ sound is often focused on the connective tissue of his many live collaborations and the electronic solitude of his studio (or record-filled bubble, as he calls it). Through his much-loved label Wonderwheel Recordings, he’s not only regularly releasing some of the most soul-shaking, eclectic sounds in the biz, but focusing deeply on artist development and creating long-lasting moments that live on far longer than their track length. The music you hear in his releases are filled with expression, reflection, and care; they’re both open-minded and deeply focused, a rarity at time in today’s overcrowded music industry. 

As a remixer, he’s also lent his “Remix Machine” to a wide range of artists including pioneers like Bob Marley and Nina Simone, as well as other like minded genre-welders like Thievery Corporation, Quantic, and Mr. Scruff. Throughout his career he’s also carved an important niche in the live music scene with his beloved Turntables on the Hudson parties, that have popped up everywhere from New York to Cairo.  
 
Currently on tour around Europe & USA, his latest album "Soul and Science" is another portrait into the importance of shared ideas and the dialogue artists can share when they look past language or place of birth. It’s another bass-heavy global party and we’re all invited.
