Todd Terje Essential Mix 2013

Solid Steel (27th December) 2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year in style, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's, with huge prizes up for grabs.

The guest mix you chose as your favourite from the last 25 years was Bonobo with his 'Directors Cut mix' of his Solid Steel Mix CD release "It came from the Sea", which was first broadcast on the 9th December 2005. It's his 2 hour version of the mix featuring tracks that didn't make the final cut including his own edit of Gang of Four and the brilliant Four Tet edit of Black Unity by Pharoah Saunders.

Up next it's your favourite mix from DK which was his 'Cymatic Frequencies' mix from the 21st January 2011. This was also his first solo AV mix and was packed full of musical highlights from 2010 and can be viewed here http://vimeo.com/19005861 Joy Orbison, Ramadanman and Maddslinky remixed by Toddla T all feature, alongside a Ninja Trio and a Big Dada double, plus James Blake, Caribou and Bassnectar.

Using Serato's Video-SL plug-in for Scratch Live, they mix, scratch and blend the sound AND vision for each track they play. Months were spent creating videos for each piece of music, either using the original source material or, in most cases sampling footage to create a new video entirely. Described as 'Video Turntablism', it has become a way for Food & DK to visualize their already legendary DJ sets. 
As usual, it's the diverse mix of music that they love and are known for, taking in current faves from Foreign Beggars & Noisia, Joy Orbison and Dorian Concept, but also plenty of classics that have kept dancefloors rocking from TTC, Pendulum, Luke Vibert, Think Tank and Z-Trip. Solid Steel in association with Serato (26th February) In Hour 2 we welcome Pedestrian with a mix celebrating the Circadian Rhythms EP, which is the debut release on the Dama Dama label co-founded with Maribou State. Tracks from the EP feature in his mix including the track JNT featuring Maribou State, plus music from Bastien Keb, Bonobo remixed by Falty DL, Gold Panda, Move D, Radiohead and ending with the moving, not to mention rare Mississippi Mud by Black Blood & The Chocolate Pickles. On Solid Steel, we like to go deep and as part of our celebrations in Hour 2, we welcome DJ Scientist with Solid Soviet Steel Radio (SSSR), a special guest mix that solely features music from the former Soviet Union. The dedicated record collector, DJ and Equinox record label owner from Berlin managed to unearth and put together an extensive and fascinating selection of tracks from countries like the Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldavia, Russia and more, resulting in a unique musical adventure. The mix starts with a deep and slow psych part, coming up with more funk-laden Soviet grooves and killer instrumental breaks. Many of these groups managed to create their own kind of sound, mixing western styles like Jazz, Funk and Rock with traditional music from their own countries. Our 25th Anniversary slot this week features Richard Dorfmeister who appeared on the show in 2003 and featured many times as one half of Kruder and Dorfmeister, as well as his project Tosca with Rupert Huber, amongst others. Opening with ECM artist Steve Tibbetts, his mix floats between Gui Boratto, his own lush edit for Selah Sue, acoustic guitar of Jeb Loy Nichols and the dubbed out Rhythm & Sound featuring Cornell Campbell on vocals. He then weaves through Pat Metheney, the dub version of Sunset from Grace Jones' last album, blues from Ry Cooder and ending with a couple of tracks from his recent Tosca album 'Odeon'.
