These Are The Breaks Part 1 Hip Hop Mix

This is an amalgam of two mixes I did for Solid Steel at the end of November, 2013. Both were 30 minutes and with a similar downbeat, electronic nature. It's the sort of thing I like to listen to late at night when I'm working on designs or writing. Both appeared on separate shows but were done around the same time so I wanted to present them in one piece like this.

A Little Night Music...

2013 Resident Mix of the Year goes to 'Coldcut meets The Orb - The Return Trip', which was the first show to properly kick off our 25th Anniversary year..............

Recorded on the anniversary of JFK's assassination and 21 years after their historic '92 New Year mix on Kiss 100 FM, Coldcut meets The Orb inna Uptown Youth House for the Return Trip. Matt Black and Jonathan More alongside studio accomplice Dor Wand got suitably enhanced with Dr LX Paterson and Youth for a multi-player late night jam session lasting over 3 hours. They then entrusted the multitracks of the set to DJ Food who heroically edited, condensed and massaged the sprawling swamp of sound into a tight - but also loose - 2 hour Solid Steel session.

Swimming through the mix are Lee Perry, Killing Joke, Sun Ra, William Burroughs, Teebs, Ry Cooder, Actress, Prince Jammy, Iggy Pop, Monty Python, Hank Williams and Hal 9000. Alongside unreleased dubs from the players themselves, remixes and versions of tunes old and new, the complete track listing for this marathon set may never be fullly disclosed. It's 2 hours, 10 minutes of sonic secrets to melt your mind, probably best listened to in headphones late at night with all suitable facilities for the full effect. Enjoy this trip.

Solid Steel Radio Show 20/12/2013 Part 1 + 2 - Coldcut meets The Orb

Solid Steel (27th December) 2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year in style, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's, with huge prizes up for grabs.

The guest mix you chose as your favourite from the last 25 years was Bonobo with his 'Directors Cut mix' of his Solid Steel Mix CD release "It came from the Sea", which was first broadcast on the 9th December 2005. It's his 2 hour version of the mix featuring tracks that didn't make the final cut including his own edit of Gang of Four and the brilliant Four Tet edit of Black Unity by Pharoah Saunders.

Up next it's your favourite mix from DK which was his 'Cymatic Frequencies' mix from the 21st January 2011. This was also his first solo AV mix and was packed full of musical highlights from 2010 and can be viewed here http://vimeo.com/19005861 Joy Orbison, Ramadanman and Maddslinky remixed by Toddla T all feature, alongside a Ninja Trio and a Big Dada double, plus James Blake, Caribou and Bassnectar.

In Hour 2, DJ Food continues with the same decade, but takes proceedings overground and compiles an hour of unofficial remixes, re-edits and versions of classic pop songs from the 80's, remodelled by fans or studio engineers with access to the separate track stems. What emerges is a collection of pop classics seen through a distorted looking glass, culled from the darkest corners of Soundcloud or the hard drives of engineers with access to audio they shouldn't have and time on their hands.
Depeche Mode remixed by a Hip Hop engineer, Tears For Fears cut to ribbons by a tape edit king, Bow Wow Wow and The Human League streamlined into a steady disco groove. Grace Jones' 'Slave To The Rhythm' gets three radically different make overs and then she covers Tubeway Army!

GREG WILSON’S EARLY 80’S FLOORFILLERS: 
A fascinating insight on how the fading Jazz-Funk scene gave way to the emerging Electro-Funk movement in the early 80’s, ‘Greg Wilson’s Early 80’s Floorfillers’, marks the 30th anniversary of when these tracks first appeared. Compiled from his record lists of the time, and unfolding month by month, Greg Wilson counts down the Top 10 Floorfillers played at his venues during the key years of ’82 and ’83. Featured, most notably, on his Tuesday sessions at Wigan Pier and Wednesday gatherings at Legend in Manchester, the most cutting-edge weekly black music nights of the era, these were the clubs most associated with the evolving Electro-Funk sound.

The majority of music played on the black scene in the UK was initially only available on import, mainly out of New York during this period, with the club nights described as ‘upfront’, meaning that the DJ’s were way ahead of the curve – what they played now, others played later, or not at all. Without these DJ’s, many now classic dance tracks would never have become UK hits (many without enjoying similar crossover success in the US) – the reason they were released here in the first place was because these specialist DJ’s were breaking them via the underground.

Things would change in a big way during those 2 years; we were entering the hybrid age for dance music, and the oncoming House and Techno and Hip Hop directions would all owe a huge debt to this era of dance alchemy and groove experimentation.

The Chemical Brothers (or Dust Brothers as they were at the time) live at The Albany, London.

Sunday 14th August 1994.

Recorded on DAT by Robin Turner.

The jump into Boops at 27.52 is because the DAT was removed in order for Tom and Ed to play music they'd made in the studio that week (instrumental of Life is Sweet often got played around this time). Any record jumps were caused by people banging into the decks, or pogoing! (I'm guilty as charged in Voodoo People). Last record cuts off due to the DAT running out.
