In Hour 2, Ollie Teeba from The Herbaliser and Soundsci gives us his own take on 'War of the Worlds' for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary. here in his own words;

'When I was 8 or 9 years old I heard Jeff Wayne's musical version of H.G.Well's 'War Of the Worlds' for the first time. It scared the pants off me. For years afterwards I listened to the record over and over. It is certainly one of the things from my childhood that cemented my interest in film scores. Though not a film score per se. Its marriage of rock music with orchestral arrangements to tell a story, had me transfixed. The combination of funky rock with sinister string parts would heavily influence and partially shape the sounds that, years later Jake Wherry and I would be making in The Herbaliser. 

A few years back I was given, as a Christmas gift, the 'Collectors Edition box set of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds'. As well as tons of interesting facts about the creation of the original recordings it had several CD's of alternate takes, remixes etc. On one CD, I excitedly discovered that they had included all of Richard Burton's dialogue parts, without music. Having already created and performed an alternate live DJ score to silent film 'The Lost World' from 1927, this seemed like a great opportunity to do a similar project with one of my favourite childhood stories.

Using records from my own collection of movie soundtracks and other suitable material, I created the original version. This was given to some close friends as a christmas present in 2010. The version you are now hearing is a somewhat revised and extended version, created specifically for the 25 years of Solid Steel. Also, it is the 75th anniversary of Orson Welles' infamous radio play, that when broadcast on Halloween 1938, had many Americans convinced that they were listening to a genuine attack from outer space. This is by no means intended as an improvement to Mr Wayne's recording but a tribute to H.G Wells, Jeff Wayne, Richard Burton, Orson Welles and of course Solid Steel.

In Hour 2 we welcome Stephen Mallinder, a founding member of the hugely influential Cabaret Voltaire, who were pioneers in British experimental electronic, industrial music and visual art. He joins the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary celebrations and says of his mix ;

"A selection of music from peers, associates, co-conspirators, influences and baton-carriers. Starting with early head-turners This Heat (1978) and filtered  through the mix claps from composer Steve Reich (1972) onto post-punkers 23 Skidoo who I'd gigged and recorded with. 
A couple of FSOL tracks - covert Cabs somewhere in there and back up north to Sheffield's first real label WARP - the original Forgemasters reworked by bleepers Unique 3, The Black Dog posse and sonic provocateurs supreme, Autechre. An offering from my own Cabaret Voltaire - a rework of Yashar with the original 70 billion people sample. Keith le Blanc and co - Major Malfunction, classic tough electro, there's a whole history from Sugarhill to Tackhead in there. And rounded  off with our one-time co-conspiritor On-U's Adrian Sherwood's mix of metal-machiners Einstürzende Neubauten, complete with sniff sample.

All spiced with some period spoken word courtesy of Malcolm X, Mr Burroughs and JG Ballard stories and lovingly mixed by hand.

DJ Food takes us down a dark, synthetic future route full of esoteric pieces more at home in sci-fi soundtracks and public information films. Solid Steel Radio Show 22/11/2013 Part 1 + 2 - The Amorphous Androgynous + DJ Food

2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's.

Your favourite Coldcut mix was the 'Journeys by DJ Special' from 20th May 2002. The original '70 minutes of Madness' was released in 1995 and often considered "the best DJ mix album of all time" and this mix coincided with it's reissue in 2002. It features extra tracks that didn't appear on the original CD including the Coldcut rework of 'People hold on'

Unsurprisingly, the most popular mix for DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot and DJ Food was their epic version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album from 31st August 2012 made entirely from the original sample sources titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ . Each of them took a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

Finally it was the Hexstatic mix from 28th January 2011 which was your favourite, with the classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. SBTRKT's remix of Modeselektors 'Art&Cash' leads perfectly into material from Robin Hexstatic's project, plus music from  Magnetic Man, Andreya Triana and Dave Angel.

Congratulations to Daniel Westlake from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, who was the winner picked at random in the competition and will receive prizes from Novation, AIAIA, Serato and Solid Steel.

Using Serato's Video-SL plug-in for Scratch Live, they mix, scratch and blend the sound AND vision for each track they play. Months were spent creating videos for each piece of music, either using the original source material or, in most cases sampling footage to create a new video entirely. Described as 'Video Turntablism', it has become a way for Food & DK to visualize their already legendary DJ sets. 
As usual, it's the diverse mix of music that they love and are known for, taking in current faves from Foreign Beggars & Noisia, Joy Orbison and Dorian Concept, but also plenty of classics that have kept dancefloors rocking from TTC, Pendulum, Luke Vibert, Think Tank and Z-Trip. Setting out on some re-edited trip hop from the likes of Depth Charge and Waxfactor leading through to more upbeat dance floor devastation from Diplo, Afrika Bambaataa and Peter Parker. From the Ninja catalogue, The Slew and Scruff jostle for space with King Cannibal and two edits from DJ Food's recent EPs. 21 year old Miami native Ricky Remedy has taken the trap/edm torch and is lapping the world with it right now. Ricky’s new EP on Mad Decent / Jeffree’s showcases his maddest tracks to date. “Make Me” starts off the EP with a elbow-throwing banger, complete with 1000 tuned “ugh’s” to fill your daily quota. Second in line is “Riccochet”, which sees Ricky changing gears to a house tempo and quite frankly killing this track. Is it jungle terror? Are birds calling in for reinforcements? We aren’t sure, but half of the club just turned into shamans in the middle of ayahuasca trip.  And finally, speeding up the tempo one more time, we get a high speed annihilator of a track that leaves the rest in the dust with “Still Wylin”.

Hexstatic in the mix this week with an eclectic mix of old and new tunes inspired by cycling around ye olde London. A classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. Big fav from last year,.. SBTRKT's remix of Modeselektors 'Art&amp;Cash' manages to be both banging and heartfelt at the same time and leads perfectly into spanking fresh new matierial from Robin Hexstatic's new 36 Kings project. Next up The surprisingly classic Flying Into Tokyo from Magnetic Man that mixes suprememly well with Andreya Triana. A &nbsp;nice syncopated tempo change from Al Usher and a big big old fav from techno legend Dave Angel and then into some nice dancefloor action from Zero 7, until we end on a more chilled vibe with lovely electronica from Koreless and Commix.
