MM Cast 01: POMPELOPE

We are very happy to welcome the guys from Pompelope for the first episode of our MM Casts. 

Pompelope was born out of the gatherings of a bunch of friends who had a passion for the four to the floor in the Belleville bargains basements. Party organizers and record pushers in their spare time, they distribute sets which range from house to disco and from downtempo to HI-NRG, as long as people dance.

Since this collaborative project from members of Limbe records, SeekSickSound and Sour records started their story, they've been releasing remarkable series of podcasts featuring artists from the likes of Tim Sweeney, Trepanado, Beppe Loda and Telephones among others.

One thing is more than clear, and that's the passion for music that this collective print on every single thing that they bring to the light. They've recently launched the first release as a label with an amazing "V.A" that includes astonishing works signed by Franz Scala, Running Hot, Hysteric, Volantis and Kito Jempere to name a few.

On this MM Cast 01 that the french guys have been cooking for us, downtempo with sunny-nostalgic vibes and polyrhythmic sounds will be the leitmotiv. A "dance not dance" mix that could be enjoyed either alone with headphones or in group that want to share gathering vibes.

Yuu Udagawa has been immersed in music and production for many years, starting as a DJ in 2000 she has since gone on to work in sound design and immersive sound.

However, her passion remains fierce for a wide breadth of music with her core influences being rock, hip-hop, funk, rare grooves, latin jazz, krautrock,techno & house.

Over the years she has worked to create atmospheric music and sounds which have since gone on to soundtrack aquariums, museums, offices, esthetic salons, apparel brands, etc. She even contributed a track which was used as a soundtrack to the Playstation 3 main menu.


 
More recently she has returned her focus to electronic music, focussing on making material for the clubs and utilising her broad array of experience to blur influences and innovate within a new space.

Her recent EP for Cyphon was a statement of intent and this mixtape shows her unreal talent as a DJ beyond this.

In Hour 2 it's fellow Canadian Gene Tellem who released her debut EP “Who Says No” on Project Pablo’s label SOBO (Sounds Of Beaubien Ouest) last month. Her mix takes in music from Lola Allen, Sean Smith, LK, Morgun, DMX Krewcharles Trees and Bradford James. She told us;
"Mixes are a great way to give certain songs another life after seeing their effect in confined space. Often those will be put aside to be rediscovered later on. A mix is also a great way to introduce new pieces that i’m excited about, in hopes to create some familiarity for them with the listener that may find themselves hearing it out in the clubs and dance parties of the world."

The Canadian producer and DJ shares her time between Vancouver and Berlin, in between running her label Freakout Cult with DJ Fett Burger, which released her 10" Monroe Bumpa / 186 Haylin' alongside Laylay in the summer, followed by a Rudow 12" in September. She had this to say about her mix;

Solid Steel (5th January) In Hour 1 we welcome Tee Mango, the alter ego of Millionhands head honcho Tom Mangan. Tee releases records on his own Millionhands imprint, as well as on AUS, Clone Royal Oak & Local Talk. His first album IMPERFECTIONS VOL. 1 - made several end of year lists in 2016 and a cracking remix of The Invisible ft Connan Mockasin followed. His follow up album is in the works with more samples and a host of live instrumentation, and even some vocals from Tee himself. He told us;
"This mix was recorded live on CDJs and a trusty old 1210 in one take. My goal was to make something that i could happily listen to in a few years and still enjoy. Selfish, but true :) I've included records that make me smile, as opposed to make me look cool. There's a few new things and a selection of old goodies in there too. The mixing is not faultless, but that's OK i think. Hope you like it."

In Hour 2 it's Los Angeles based Alpha Pup Records who have served as a record label and distribution network for over a decade now, bridging gaps between a multitude of genres and lifestyles. so its a half hour long mouse jam of what i been working on with Valentin today. i may be swapping those vocals out for better ones with less effects but the idea is there, proper Deep futuristic urban funk from the Berlin Underground, literally 3.5 metres underground at the all new Loonie Bin Laboratories.

Solid Steel (21st September) In Hour 1 we're joined by San Proper who has released music on Rush Hour, Dekmantel, Perlon, Church and many others.  The music he makes is always idiosyncratic from his earliest 12”s right up to his debut album. He had this to say about his mix;
"Being schooled by crazy groundbreaking artists like Aphex Twin, Mille Plateau and Jeff Mills in the mid 90s, the music by Coldcut, Dj Food, Vadim and Dj Krush actually felt more inspirational, because of the Funk, Triphop & B-boy-Jazz which was preserved by Ninja Tune, therefore it is more than a sentimental honor to boomerang it with a mix for Solid Steel. This right here, my mix, is the after-effect of a mid-90s-Youngblood-Dj trying to put his foot down. Proud to be able to work this mix 20 years later... I am a Ninja Toon.
