I noticed that the great Cal Tjader passed away around 40 years ago today (May 5th), and while I typically don't like doing death anniversaries, it did feel like a good time to revisit some of his records. The feeling of his music can't be understated - it just feels GOOD. Especially right now as spring moves toward summer, it seems perfect to break these albums out. This episode is also a bit of a sequel to an earlier Tjader mix on episode 24 of PFTS - I made sure to play a different selection of tracks, so go back and check that one too if you haven't already! Hope you enjoy.

Solid Steel (4th July) We're pleased to welcome LA vocalist and producer Seven Davis Jr to Solid Steel, following releases on Must Have and Apron Records. It's a mix themed around his next EP featuring music from Slum Village, Connan Mockasin, Kutmah and his own unreleased music including a sublime cover of the classic Sly Stone track "If you want me to stay". This is what he had to say about his mix:
" In support of the upcoming release of my "Friends" EP on Classic Records (July 7 2014), the subject of this mix is about a different side of friendship. Perhaps the worst, which is the awful "Friend-Zone". I dedicate this mix to anyone who is suffering from this condition. This year, the Natural Resources Defense Counsel (NRDC) has been selected as the recipient of all proceeds. As one of the world’s most prominent environmental protection organizations, it strives to protect nature in ways that advance the long-term welfare of present and future generations. Tartelet Records is proud to support this important mission with its exclusive end-of-year release.

Went into the crates to pull a few selections from the great jazz label Muse. Tried to stay away from some of the sample-favorites (no Walt Barr or Catalyst this time around). Instead, it's a journey into the a variety of styles and flavors, some creative and beautiful music made by a wide range of musicians in the 70s and early 80s. There's definitely another stack of records I wasn't able to include this round, so maybe a part two will be in the works for the future.
