This is Duck Trash’s set from Tomorrow’s Fires, a party celebrating the release of Erika’s “Anevite Void” album on February 25, 2023. Mix theme: After getting abducted by aliens, one must learn how to adapt & grow plants on an unfamiliar planet in outer space.

It’s hard to overstate the transformative power of the American Underground. Things get lost when it’s just a systematic big business, all these special things that make the core essence so powerful and palpable. IT first encountered @ducktrash when BMG played for them in Indianapolis last September with Noncompliant at this exquisite dive bar called State Street Club with the most open minded crowd. It wasn’t what it looked like, it really transcended time and space. “Duck Trash is a queer techno & electro selector who believes in the healing power of the dance floor.” We couldn’t agree more, and we’re so glad they got to do their Detroit debut at Erika’s album release party. They are part of the fabric that makes the midwest so amazing, the true underground freaks.

Danish producer, composer, singer and record collector Astrid Engberg is the creator of this week's calm and kaleidoscopic Sunday Mix. Her new album, 'Trust', is a stunning meditation on intuition and new motherhood, with her mix also looking to familial connections and experiences for inspiration.

“I’ve been collecting records since I was 15 years old," begins Engberg. "For this mix I wanted to slow down – like, really slow down and dive into the sections of my collection that I don’t play out or use in mixes, the stuff I listen to at home with my family on Sunday mornings. There’s some pretty epic stuff in here that you can turn on, and just let flow through you while doing life."

For her first mix released in over a decade, Amber Gillen (immersive installation artist and visual artistic director for Interdimensional Transmissions) takes us on a journey through time—and ultimately ourselves. It’s also Samhain: the end of October where the boundary between the past, present, and future feels thin and energy flows thick. It reminds us of Keith Moxey’s suggestion that time might not “run at the same speed and density” in all places. Either way (or any way), it’s the right time to have Gillen take us through her sonic past across ambient, rock, and funk.

We’ve paired Gillen’s mix with a piece from Berlin-based, Sulaymaniyah-born Hiwa K. Hiwa, while originally a realist painter, now crafts sculptures, videos, and sounds that  “aim [not] for an accurate depiction of a reality that could be, but reinvent and transform the reality at hand.” Work such as Blind as the Mother Tongue unspool the debris of capitalism to better see how social structures like borders and time zones are reinforced. “The work I do is very much about reminding how many fingerprints we have onto each other,” Hiwa mentions, “[and] how much we are embedded into each other.”

Moods 62: Amber Gillen

A few months ago I had the very real pleasure to play a morning set for Chiilits 2023. Been meaning to post this for a while, but you know, life and all that. I was sitting listening to it with my sister and she was like, what am I waiting for? Anyway, this leans pretty dark for a morning set, as there are tendrils from the night before, following up dear friends with darker sets. Just where my headspace was at. It was incredibly special to spend that weekend with so many generous hearts and ears. Love to my camp crew, new friends, and especially to the Chillits committee for the opportunity. <3
