“Inspirations/new excitements that have influenced you past, present, and future”

This was an easy assignment to get excited for. There is a lot more to a proper mixtape than shmushing together some mp3s on the computer, and I kept having to correct myself when referring to it as a “podcast,“ since it is far from it - 95% vinyl, 100% improvised live. This mixtape is inspired by an actual cassette made by an old friend from San Francisco, Rob Verani, in the early 90s. It was he who first introduced me to “real” industrial music. I’ll never forget the first time I heard Merzbow’s Music for Bondage Performance 2 - it was the first piece of experimental music that I really connected to on more than just an abstract or visceral level. The whole album has a sort of narrative quality, with highly anticipated twists and turns that remind me of listening to a beautiful piece of classical music. Then I started making connections between different sounds, styles, samples, etc. - the fantastic and devilishly obvious segue between the Merzbow and the Nurse With Wound for example is one of my favorites of all time. It was then that I was inspired become an experimental DJ, and since this was decidedly an anti-social pursuit, I would do mixtapes “that people could listen to on the internet.” Being that it was 1996 and we barely had a dialup connection, my friends were a bit skeptical. But I remained steadfast in my determination and the rest is history.
