This track is a posthumous collaboration with Jeffrey Melton, aka Nofi, who passed away on March 30, 2013. It was recorded live in April 2013 atop a June 2012 Melton live recording.

I took 3 minutes between 54:23 and 57:23, a section with a strict rhythm and a crawling synth part.  My goal was to play off the strict rhythm.

My loops included a layering of the "plane" sounds and the "carfadeout" sound I created for Disquiet 64.  They were layered to go off-rhythm and out of phase.  

Also included are a couple of samples from my track "You've Got Less Time Than You Think" - which is a piece of music I made last year that I thought turned out rather well, the title of which is kind of a call to arms for me to get on with things - making sounds, art, or whatever, and to not worry about all the other noise of life.

Noise Of Life (disquiet0066-nofi)

This is a special project. Very nice Marc.
I turned off the lights and lit a candle to listen to Jeffrey's track. It was a pleasure getting lost in his sound.

This track was recorded in Ableton Live and mastered with iZotope's Ozone 5.
I used a bass guitar and ran it through Komplete's Guitar Rig 5. The patch is called Christal-MC and it provided the sweeping echo chorus pad sound off of the bass notes.

Very special project this week - very fine idea, Marc - happy to be part of it.
I fumbled around with the source for a while, found a part I liked, plus a few others I liked after bending them a bit - Paul Stretch shortened the track - I also used the very beginning as a layer...Time too play along, hmm tried a bunch of different things out: AM radio, a feedback box, Granulator in Ableton, E-Bow on guitar etc. etc. nothing worked for me....finally my old Strat through Abletons amp rack with plenty of dissonant noises...Couldn't really think of a title, so left it without

Someone bombed the Marathon two miles from my office. Then they shot a cop in front of a building where I get lunch sometimes. Then they carjacked an SUV on a street I'd been on myself just a few hours earlier, on the way home from work. Then work told us all to stay home the next day, because of the lockdown.

Not the quietest of weeks. But "Boston Strong", indeed...

Used Audacity to decode and excerpt the required source material. Created variants of each sound to use as raw materials, then played/mixed/effected in Ableton Live.

This is a shared-sample project. Create a single new piece of music by employing the selected material (see below) of each the following three tracks. First Junto track I've tried - in point of fact, first thing I've recorded in years!  Didn't really have anything in mind when I sat down to work on it, other than a desire to use the constraints of the project as a creative impetus.  As far as process goes, I stacked the three component tracks in Audacity, then time-stretched, snipped, and aligned things until I had a pleasing shape.  From there, one of the tracks went through a fair amount of mangling in Hourglass.  Finally assembled the piece in Studio One, added pitch shifters and delays to add motion, a touch of compression and eq to glue it all together, and then laid on a dollop of reverb for good measure.

So Friday morning came and with that the weekly email from Marc...after reading the description I knew what to do (almost) right of the bat...wanted to use two homemade instruments and my crazy noiseswasch pedal. So I started out with the first tone - created it using a soundbox build by me under the supervision of the inventor Derek Holzer aka Macumbista (https://www.facebook.com/macumbistanet?fref=ts) ...it's a feedback box with a half watt amp driving a small speaker using a piezo as mic... the second tone came from the noiseswasch. I dialed in one that I liked in harmony with the first one produced...then it was time to get down to the beat making...I just finished building an acoustic laptop the other day, so I couldn't help but use that as the only instrument for the 3 beats - everything is handplayed no looping or other manipulations (I mastered it slightly with comp and eq after mixing)...the image for the track is the laptop...My friend Tore Honoré Boe (https://www.facebook.com/origamiboe?fref=ts) is the inventor and master musician of these wunder boxes...

Sense the wind [disquiet0071-windmusic]

I knocked this one up quite quickly this morning before anyone really got up!  My flat is pretty quiet most of the time.  My phone is always on silent, neighbours never really make much noise either.   

First track I recorded on my 4 track cassette was the lady's waterpump downstairs which kicks in when she is in the shower.  Managed to get that just in time!
Second track was my oven clock in the kitchen which makes a constant quiet ticking sound. 
Third track was just the ambient sound of my front room with the windows open. (I always have the windows open whatever the weather)
My doorbell has a soft ting to it.  I think it's broken as it used to make a louder ring rather than a ting!  I made a tape loop of the ting of my doorbell, layered it, shifted the pitch and looped again.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.
