Adowshay (disquiet0480)

“The unadorned idea of a goal is ambiguous,” writes the neuroscientist Read Montague in his book Your Brain Is (Almost) Perfect. “As with any complex information-processing system, there are many levels of software in the brain … all other subgoals take a backseat to the most important edict—‘Stay alive until tomorrow.’”

One could be forgiven for procrastinating creative efforts during these past fourteen or so months. Alternatively, such conditions may also inspire a flurry of new activity that otherwise would not have happened. Regardless, some amount of stuff doesn’t get done.

Suss Müsik had an album ready to go for nearly a year before actually completing and releasing it this week. The concept was to revisit prior works with simpler, more spare arrangements. 

Suss Müsik was also interested in exploring what French philosopher Gilles Deleuze described as “figurative analogies,” blurring the auditory lines between how digital and analogue sounds are represented.

This week’s Junto contribution, titled Deleuze, is the demo of a track that wasn’t included on an album that almost never got made. A figurative analogy, perhaps, for what we mean to do vs. what we actually do.

Orchestral version of my Boundless Track featuring Noire Particle Engine by Native Instruments

Boundless - Noire

Step 1: Locate the latest instrument, piece of music/sound software, or related technology that has come into your possession. 
Step 2: Employ only the single thing identified in Step 1 to compose and record a short track.

My latest purchase was a Tibetan Bowl you see in the photo, I bought it last Sunday in a garage sale here in Paris.  It was a deal and included 100 incense sticks ....
Now: my previous purchase was, like a year ago, another Tibetan Bowl, so I did many recordings using that one  in the past year. But the challenge forces me to go back into the bronze age. Again.

I used the two sound you make with this thing, _Tap_ that's a "hit" on the edge of the bowl with the fat wood stick/mallet and a _Rub_ drone turning the stick around the bowl's edges.
Then I just pitched up and down to several different notes and constructed this soundscape. But the source is just that single bowl. And 40 sec Lexicon Reverbs with Wah Wah...

No synth used off course, nothing but the bowl.

i think the last instrument i got was art pyrite softsynth. i try not to get too much new stuff; work with what i've got (depth v breadth / necessity is the mother of invention etc)

i played for a few minutes and turned up the depth and feedback on the drone setting throughout. weirdly when i looked at the recording it said i'd been playing for over 9 minutes. just did a little limiting and normalized it.

So there are three new things involved: the Casio MG-500 MIDI guitar pictured here, which I just bought used for cheap, and two programs I wrote to work with it.

Casio doesn't have the reputation of supreme audio quality, but this is quite a good guitar; it's said they were manufactured by Ibanez. I can do both MIDI and regular guitar at the same time and there's a switch to choose either or both (which I used during this piece).

I wrote two pieces of code in ChucK to work with this guitar: one is a sound chain with echo, chorus, reverb, a bit of distortion, and gating--this processes the regular electric guitar audio. The other piece of code takes the MIDI output and triggers a sample from Nathan Moody's wonderful collection that we drew on in disquiet0354, which I purchased not long after that. I run this two different ways during this piece--one is as a pitched sample, based on the input note; the other way (invoked later) chooses a random spot in the sample as the starting place. 

I like this combo because it allows me to use my regular guitar skills to play something sort of musical, but it also offers up some fun surprises, especially as the MIDI can be a little glitchy (in a good way).

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)
