Cal used to be one half of Nottingham deep house / downtempo outfit Neon Heights back in the 2000s, springing from the same fertile Notts scene as Crazy P, Bent, DiY, Inland Knights etc, and recording twelves and albums for many labels including Glasgow Underground, Yellow, Sunday Best, Afro Art, DiY, Imperial Dub and Silver Network.

Family commitments then lead to quite a few years away from music, until 2020 saw The Secret Soul Society surface with a couple of EPs on Paper Wave Recordings (Paper’s Balearic offshoot) and an LP for Slightly Transformed Recordings.

Having relocated to South Wales and started the label Scruffy Soul Recordings with Australia’s The Found Sound Orchestra and Japan’s Jules Brennan, The Secret Soul Society is all about just having fun: digging into old records and reworking them into something new: a musical collage of funk, soul, jazz, disco and all the good stuff squelched up into a psychedelic whole.

DJ-wise, it's anything deep, soulful and left-field, goes: jazz, funk, Afro, beats, dub, soul and reggae mixed up into a wholesome, enticing brew

Summer Soul - Notes On A Journey Selection by Stefan Leisering (Jazzanova)

Here comes a new Red Stripe Disco delivery with this 12th delivery. It finally took around 1 year to collect the records for this new episode. I could have waited a bit more (not all of the wants were cleared from the wantlist) but I wanted to drop that one within this summer. I had some nice surprises on the way though, that I am happy to share with you with this new mix! 

As usual, the selection focuses on "reggae not reggae" stuffs from the 70's / early 80's - ranging from killer UK Lovers Rock to Disco & Boogie, even a couple of Rap stuffs, with a few nice covers on the way. All of the records selected are related to Jamaica and/or Reggae labels, with one exception being from Trinidad... 

I hope this new episode will please your ears & feet, and will be helping finishing this nice 2016 summer in the nicest way possible! 
I have already started the quest for a 13th mix, with some dope records already on the list!

I have done the mix to celebrate the release of Paz e Futebol, Volume 3 compilation compiled by Junior Santos.

Over time, Junior and I developed a friendship based upon listening, talking, analyzing and trading Brazilian music.

When the idea came up to let Junior compile Volume 3, I was so thrilled that I even agreed to change the original concept of our Paz e Futebol series. Namely to compile Brazilian influenced music from all over the world be it from the past or the present. 

Junior, however, selected 8 fantastic recordings made in Brazil from the 80's which throw a bridge from major released recordings to independently organised releases. 

This mix features some of those recordings but it also pays homage to the original concept of Paz e Futebol and features actual productions with a Brazilian taste as well. Additionally, the mix presents recordings which might be part of one of the next Paz e Futebol volumes. Enjoy:)
