I used to play hip hop.
Recorded live on December 16th, 2001 at Chaos - 225 East Houston Street, NYC. The Party was called "The Candy Store" and this was the infamous "Happy birthday Goldie" night, celebrating DJ Goldfinger's birthday. Shout to Paul Sevigny, who was not there, but to this day, still yells "Happy birthday Goldie" at me as a result of this recording.

The end of 2024 draws to a close and I offer up the seventh version of my yearly mixtape.  It is a pleasure to do these mixes each year and I never really know where they will end up but centred around pieces of music that I picked up over the year, that caught my ear (tracklist below).

This time it leans towards a lot of my own edits made especially for the mix, a few yet-to-released remixes and beautiful music from all over the world. I think there is definitely a focus more on precious, moving music and less towards the dancefloor. Hard to explain why, I tend not to overthink these mixtapes. 

To give you a bit of a look behind the curtain I painstakingly craft each of these mixtapes using Ableton, treating it more like an extended production than just two tracks mixed together. I end up with a sprawling mix of tracks, acapellas, synths, samples and founds sounds. A kind of patchwork of sound. Though only 21 pieces of music this session somehow grew to 162 different racks, from cumbia rhythms to kicks to take a track into a new place.

Cosmic Serenade

Summer has finally left us and as temperatures begin to dip, the familiar magical chill of Fall sets in. This mix tries to capture that time of year. We long to hold on to summer, but we must say farewell. Many of us say goodbye to our summer flings, our summer love or summer love story. Remembering what once was as we begin feeling things shift all around us. That's where this mix begins: in the first few weeks of Autumn, with its symbolic and inevitable changing of tree leaves' colors — coinciding with when cuffing season drifts across our minds.  

This period can be a time of indecision and mixed emotions — if you're in a summer fling: should we continue this? That feeling when you want to, but your partner doesn't. Or that feeling when your partner does, but you don't. At the same time, it's going to be getting really cold soon, so shouldn't we just stay in this? That nostalgia for summer, that longing for the past when things were good — or alternatively with the onset of cuffing season and the feeling of time passing, that wanting, that longing for someone, for a future. The inherent contradiction, the tension between wanting to be in a relationship and not wanting to be in one is the overarching theme of this mix. 

It's made up of almost entirely new music (i.e. relatively recent releases) from many emerging/buzzing artists (as much as I could find songs that fit the concept/theme of the mix — luckily everyone writes songs about love!). Mostly R&B & Soul, with a sprinkling of Caribbean and Afrobeats vibes a half to 3/4 of the way through (yes, I know... my typical style lol).

The thing to remember while listening to these songs is that the ONLY THING CONSTANT IN LIFE IS CHANGE ITSELF and it's wisest to observe the beauty of it all in the same way we appreciate the gorgeous changing colors of the trees, right before the leaves fall. Hope you enjoy.
