This is a mix that long ago lived on the internet, then ended up properly mastered as one of the cassettes in our 15th anniversary box set. We're releasing it again now to bring attention to our friend, Keith McIvor aka JD Twitch, who's been diagnosed with a brain tumor. The liner notes for the cassette, below, lay out how formative our experiences of Optimo (Espacio) were as we built our thing. Keith played the very first Mister Saturday Night, and we went on to develop a long friendship with both him and Jonnie. We are forever grateful to them and hope you will support Keith and his family now as they deal with one of the most difficult moments of life. Love live Keith McIvor. Long live Optimo.

Optimo were huge inspirations when Justin and I threw our first Mister Saturday Night parties in 2009. Justin had seen them play at the Motherfucker party at Limelight sometime in 2004, while I spent time at the weekly Sunday night parties that JD Twitch (Keith McIvor) and Jonnie Wilkes’ threw in Glasgow during my college days. We were both taken by Keith and Jonnie’s ability to incorporate just about any music into their sets while still pleasing everyone in the room, record diggers and punters alike.

This particular set is from the summer of 2010, a party we hosted in a Bushwick back alley, and it encapsulates Optimo's knack for party-rocking in the most unconventional way. Classic house gives way to afrobeat, builds up into a high energy Italo track that drips to a halt, before revving into a sequence that includes an off-kilter Comeme record, “Pump Up The Jam,” ‘80s electro, lo-fi techno and Jesse Jackson’s “I Am Somebody” speech, before Liquid Liquid's Sal Principato grabs the mic and sings “Optimo,” the track for which Keith and Jonnie named their project. To hear is to believe.

Has anyone toyed with the rules and subverted expectation quite as much as DJ Fett Burger in recent years? We can’t think of many people who are more thrilling to listen to than the Sex Tags co-founder. Whether viewing ambient through a dubby house lens, getting wilfully weird with time signatures or wonderfully wonky with his grooves, the Norwegian is in a class of one. He’s fairly prolific too, with more than 22 EPs to his name since 2012, yet each and every time he steps out, he manages to sound more fun and freaky than before. 

It’s the same story with his DJ sets. The one we have here is a three-hour ready-made party: it starts with ass-wiggling funk and joyous disco before things begin to unravel into tumble-down house and heavily percussive afro drums. Fett Burger isn’t afraid to suddenly switch up the tempo or roughly blend in a new tune, either, just so long as the energy remains. And it does, with things ending up not far from where they started with a classic slice of Prince that will leave you wanting to do it all again.

No introductions necessary for installment number two in our series of recordings from the booth. Enclosed is just under three hours of hard music from two members of UR that we were lucky enough to have come through at the end of March.

The recording is split into two parts. The high-octane, acidic, psycho stuff in this section comes courtesy of Dex Nomadico, who played during the first half of the party. And the raw, thumping, soulful sounds in the other section are taken from the last hour or so of Mark Flash's set – just as daylight broke through. 

Big respect and praise due to the whole UR family for letting us air these out and to all the dancers who gave this one their energy.
