Here we are with a recording from the first (but certainly not last) time Kiernan Laveaux graced the decks at Nowadays back in September of 2021. In it you’ll find so much of what we’ve come to love about the T4T LUV NRG affiliate: swarming percussion, freaky and frenetic psychedelia, otherworldly groove, a captivating sense of narrative, and so much more. 

This mix is a two and a half hour segment from her closing set, after DJ Voices and Azu Tiwaline earlier in the night. Packed to the brim with moments of tension and release, it makes for one truly wild and mesmerizing ride. The home listener is likely to find it just as enchanting as the dancers did.

Nowadays Live and Direct 014 - Kiernan Laveaux

We’re very excited to present the first Live & Direct of 2023, courtesy of our Pittsburgh-based residents Honcho. 

This one was recorded live at Nowadays on the first weekend of January, to a room of smiling faces for whom the festive nature of the new year had clearly not worn off. It's two hours of the crew in pure form, with all three DJs locked into the same irresistible groove. George, Aaron and Clark have a knack for uniting their own unique styles to present a cohesive vision of chugging, sexy house music, and here it is on full display. Big thanks to Honcho for letting us share this with the world!

In addition to the killer music from both Honcho and Father Dukes, this night was especially memorable thanks to everyone in attendance contributing to the friendly and joyful vibe, from the dancers to the staff and everyone in between. A big thanks is due to you all as well!

Nowadays Live and Direct 015: Honcho

Nowadays Live and Direct returns after a long hiatus with a 5-hour recording from Carlos Souffront (@csouffront), recorded from 10 am - 3 pm at our Halloween Nonstop party on October 29, 2022. Carlos returns to Nowadays for another Nonstop set this weekend, playing from 3 pm to 6 pm Sunday afternoon.

A regular at Interdimensional Transmissions' No Way Back parties in Detroit and beyond, Carlos Souffront brings a brilliant sense of creative alchemy to the decks, combining years of experience and digging with a sensibility like no other. Abstract rhythms meld together into inexplicable chaos magic. Dark, shadowy selves emerge, ready to be explored with a sense of mischief and playfulness, carried through by an acid bassline or cheeky vocal.

For this extended Halloween set during the real witching hours, Carlos summoned all of the party gremlins, goblins, and ghouls to the Nowadays dancefloor for the ultimate seance.

Nowadays Live and Direct 017: Russell E.L. Butler

This installment of Live & Direct features a portion of a set from Donis (@donis-bk), played at their residency on December 13, 2024, opening the night which also featured special guest Kai Alcé.

Anyone who’s been to one of Donis’s residency nights can tell you that the expressive, energetic style of house dancing emblematic of New York’s house music heyday is not yet a lost art, even if dance battles and baby powder are no longer a common sight on today’s dancefloors. A Dominican DJ and producer born and raised in Brooklyn, Donis equally embraces tradition and innovation in their approach to house, techno, and beyond.

“I think there is a huge lack of actual dance culture specifically within the younger generation of club-goers. A big goal of mine with the residency is to cultivate space for that. I see parties as conversations between DJ and dancer, one-sided conversations are never fun.” – Donis, from an email interview in September 2023

This coming Friday, January 17, Donis returns to the club alongside Baltimore’s Karizma.

Introduce yourself? Where do you live? Where are you from?

Hi! I’m Ma Sha from Russia :-) Currently based in Brooklyn, NY.
Fun fact: I’ve never eaten cucumbers!

Earliest musical influence?

My parents were big fans of Russian rock. So my childhood was filled with cool powerful tunes and memorable sweaty concert experiences. Later I started breakdancing and discovered a wide range of tunes I still listen to & play. It was everything from funk, hip hop, breaks to disco, world, and dub music. When I was a teenager, I spent a summer in the forest near Moscow in the breakdance camp. I remember our jam sessions in the middle of the forest dancing to djs spinning funk
records at 8AM. So cool!

Favorite club experience?

One of the experiences I can highlight was playing in one of my favorite spots in Brooklyn, Mezcaleria La Milagrosa. It is a hidden Mezcal club/bar behind the deli’s refrigerator door. I am super grateful to Felipe aka Felipe From BK :) for believing in me and letting me play when I was starting out as a dj. I ended up playing records for 4 hours and even had a small b2b with Felipe at the end!

Current gear set up?

I use two turntables, a two channel mixer, monitors for DJing and a MIDI controller/sequencer/keyboard for production. This mix was recorded on cdjs and Xone 92 mixer at Newtown Radio during one of the late nights :-) Shout out to Newtown for moving to a new spot and being an awesome community space.

I’ve been breakdancing all my teenage years, so my move would be the Russian knee-bending move aka the squat-and-kick dance. 


Favorite late night snack?

I am traveling in Colombia now and I got addicted to Arequipe, a creamy Colombian caramel spread. The golden rule: five spoons of Arequipe every night for sweet dreams  ̄\_(ツ)_/ ̄

What do you wish to see in the future for the dance community?

More experimentation with music/environment/space/vibe choices & willingness from the community to discover it! Less judgement towards each other. People dancing freely and expressing love to each other and music :-)

Solid Steel returns with brand new and exclusive mixes from Four Tet and Trevor Jackson.

For this special show we have Kieran Hebden - AKA Four Tet - partnered with Trevor Jackson - founder of Output Recordings, the independent record label he ran between 1996 and 2006. 

Both artists have a long history with the show (this is Hebden’s 7th appearance and Jackson's 3rd), as well as with each other. Hebden’s early releases as part of Fridge and his first solo release - the 1997 "Double Density" single under the artist name 4T Recordings - were released on Output. The label was also home to the first releases under his Four Tet Alias, including 1998 singles "Thirtysixtwentyfive" and "Misnomer", and 1999's “Glasshead"/"Calamine" single and first full-length album “Dialogue”. Jackson also released music on the label as Skull and Open Music and elsewhere including his work as Playgroup.

Speaking about the mix and his history with Jackson, Hebden told us: “This is a mix of music from all over the place that I’ve been enjoying and getting inspired by in recent times.  A snapshot of my personal listening world. Some of the way I search for music and the way I DJ was learnt from Trevor Jackson so his influence is always in what I do in some way.  I met him when I was a teenager and he introduced me to loads of records with all different styles and origins and also showed me ways to bring these sounds into the future through sampling and DJing. This open minded approach to listening and sound I think is one of the great strengths particularly of producers who came from hip hop in the 80’s and 90’s because there was such a strong incentive to explore all types of music in the search for samples. The passion and enthusiasm for listening and discovering music that comes from this is something I have huge respect for"
