To celebrate 20 years of building Labyrinths, we have decided to release one set from each of the last ten years. I've chosen ten timeless moments that both document the history of the event and provide a historical snapshot of underground electronic music over the past ten years.

We have chosen a broad range--from closing techno sets, to morning ambient sets, to experimental sets to close the night. Each set represents a different side of the event. Taken together, they present a portrait of a decade of music.

The Labyrinthの20周年を記念して、過去10年間を振り返り、それぞれの年からひとつのミックスをピックアップすることにしました。イベントの歴史を記録すると同時に、過去10年間のアンダーグラウンドエレクトロニックミュージックの歴史的なスナップショットを提供します。今聞いても色褪せない、タイムレスな極上のミックスをお楽しみください。

テクノのクロージングセットから、朝のアンビエントセット、そして夜を締めくくるエクスペリメンタルセットまで幅広いセレクトですが、どのセットもThe Labyrinthの欠かせない側面を表しており、ここ10年におけるエレクトロニック ミュージックの全容とも言えるでしょう。

Chinese-German artist @samgoku has a distinctive take on techno that draws on his own Asian heritage and blends it with contemporary electronics. Across two sublime albums for Atomnation and Permanent Vacation, he has infused his fluid rhythms with gorgeous melodies and ambient haze, traditional Eastern instruments and ethereal moods. This summer, he debuted on the Dekmantel label with four tracks of unconventional techno that marry the physical with the emotional in exceptional style.

There are plenty of similar contrasts in this week's mix, which is an almost two-hour dive into his sound world. It is a deep and compelling blend of supple rhythms that are always subtly shifting. His pristine selections take in dubby and cavernous grooves, tripped-out minimal details and stylish techno cuts that always come with plenty of colour and high-definition designs which lend the whole thing a futurist edge but very human soul.

A regular across the clubs of his homeland, Bahrein in Buenos Aires, Dorian Gray in Córdoba and Mendoza in Tucuman, Berni is no stranger to spellbinding sonic journeys behind the decks as well as magical production work in the studio.

Now making his Proportion debut, “Echoes of Lotus” is stunningly arranged into an “Intro Mix” that gently gathers pace after a stunning beatless opening that showcases an array of rippling arp, cadenced pluck and sweeping pad textures. A heavy beat enters the fray at the 2-minute mark, heralding a strong rhythmic framework for the free-flowing melodic textures that sit atop as hi-hats and shakers create subtle dancefloor intensity. Waxing and waning with ease, the track is a prescient reminder of Berni’s impressive talent.

Partner track, “Obsidian Bloom” opens with more traditional club-friendly characteristics as a four-to-the-floor kick creates a sturdy backdrop for ticking hi-hats and syncopated bassline to form a dark and dynamic foundation. A swirling lead adds sonic intrigue as it rises and falls with filtered intensity, sharing its space with a huge sweeping pad and white-noise effects. A stripped-back breakdown provides a moment for reflection as the third movement erupts via a filtered snare-roll, before dropping back into the powerful groove and a new immaculately placed melody that takes the track in an energising new direction in the second half.

Alright alright, here we are with another installment of Live and Direct after a few months off. Our first recording for 2020 comes from a memorable night last November when our resident Aurora Halal invited Pessimist in to share the booth. 

Aurora provided the opening (and closing) moments, which is a side of the beloved techno we are really enjoying getting to know. Known for her meticulously programmed sets that build with both patience and intensity, this opening stays true to her hypnotic style. Taking us from cinematic dub techno to pitched up club favorites and back again, it's a subterranean and psychedelic ride leading us to the surface just before Pessimist's dnb stylings took over for the night.

Aurora is back in our booth on March 28 alongside Wata Igarashi, DJ Python, Juliana Huxtable and more for Nowadays Nonstop. Tickets for that are available on Resident Advisor now.

Lockdown seemed like the perfect time to start our new mix series, so here we are with the very first edition. Our good friend @Doppelate has come through with a typically excellent mix, perfect for upping the spirits and keeping the pleasant times rolling during Quarantine. Channelling his effervescent powers concocted through hard-earned affiliations with Cong Burn/X-Kalay/Gestalt Records/Haŵs and so on, he's put together an unreal selection of raucous good fun incarnate.

Breathecast 001 ~ Doppelate

Born in Ploiesti, Romania, on the cusp of the Romanian Revolution, @andusimion’s artistic vision, which encompasses both music and photography, is shaped by the grey blocks of his childhood neighbourhood, industrialisation, and the remnants of a communist era that was receding just as he was arriving in the world. Influenced by the Romanian minimal movement, he has crafted his own distinctive talent for crafting deep, acid-infused journeys.

With releases on Atipic, Insound Recordings, Particular, Palinoia, Stela Music and Polen, Simion is also one third of @Lisiere-Collectif, which he founded with Bogdan Ardeleanu and Dan Gheorghe.

His Patterns of Perception 64 emerges from the aftermath of the sudden loss of his father some weeks ago. The intensity and energy of this set is marked by turmoil and introspection, with higher BPMs and more aggressive mixes reflective of the grief he has been facing. Simion has had this selection of music on repeat since his father’s passing, using its energy to carry him forwards and out into the sunlight again.

As we edge painstakingly closer to the subterfuge of normality, our mix series continues to ease you into the obscurity of reality. 

Volume 004 of the Breathecast brings DRED and TANSTAAFL Records frontman John Osborn into the fold for a transcendental brain-dance concoction that slots seamlessly into the chasm of epic afterhour exploration. John has garnered a reputation for being one of the most meticulous selectors in the game, sculpting his sound via time spent in Berlin institutions like Tresor, Cookies, Panorama Bar and at the Sub:stance parties at Berghain.

A master of mesmerizing, emotive passages, he is known for his careful consideration, patient execution, and sublime selections. As co-founder of the now-defunct MNML SSGS blog and event series and a resident at the semi-regular Sound Garden chill out parties, he has spread his infectious love for boundless forms of music far and wide, reaching audiences across the globe. After hearing his acclaimed mixes for podcasts such as Electronic Exploration and Mysteries of the Deep, we are ecstatic to have him contribute to UNRUSH. So grab a blanket, some tea, and watch the eternal processes of decay and rebirth unfold before you with this very special session from Chris SSG.
