For this week's release, we feature the latest single by Ranchi based, The Mellow Turtle aka Rishabh Lohia. The track is dedicated to the strength and beauty of the tribal women of Jharkhand, the state he hails from. An #Abstract #Downtempo track, it is a unique amalgamation of #Tribal drum elements, interlaced with sampled traditional ragas and #Electronic arpegios and synths. A musical metaphor for the flux in the lives and times of these women as they are faced with hardships and inequality, while still holding on to their traditions and values.

Since the abrogation of Article 370 by the Narendra Modi led government of India, Kashmir is experiencing a complete communications blackout and an enforced clampdown on civic society. Under the guise of security, the State, along with it's ready and willing collaborators in the media, have pushed forth a narrative of normalcy and content while waging a propaganda war against human rights organisations, journalists and activists who publicly challenge their words and policy. 

In the midst of all this noise, the voice of Kashmiris has been silenced. Srinagar-based hip-hop artist Ahmer Javed who last month released his seminal debut album Little Kid Big Dreams in collaboration with Sez On The Beat, went back home on the day of Rajnath Singh's announcement to be with his family. Over the six weeks that he was in Kashmir, he recorded a mixtape - a collection of songs that document exactly what he saw happening in the city. Titled Inqalab, the mixtape, which is entirely self-produced, was recorded during the curfew and is a harrowing statement against the narrative of the Indian government that is still proclaiming normalcy and peace in the valley despite all evidence to the contrary. 

Inqalab is a reaction to this crucial event in history, showcasing a raw, gut-wrenching and aggressive side to Ahmer's writing that pulls no punches.

So finally I'm releasing these tracks. phew..
I always used to sample old records from 60's -80's, which came before my time. That helps me to connect with the old music and brilliant artists. 
I thought why not to get something from Indian retro as well, of which I've always been a fan of. 
Hence I experimented as always, lol, hope you guys dig it.

There’s something incredible about #COFFEE​ -  it’s the power of a cup to bring us together. What makes my coffee better is when I play my favourites and just sit with a cuppa. It got me thinking and I decided to reach out to the people I love working with (obviously, pre-COVID)  and said why don’t we just play more music. The very first draft of this compilation was being workshopped by the end of June, 2019. The world was in a precarious place then too, but by the time we had arrived at an LP ready for release it was being plunged headfirst into a new era. The abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir, followed by the attempted re-writing of India’s citizenship laws had spawned the first sustained wave of protests in India since Prime Minister Modi and his NDA government had assumed power in 2014.

So we stayed its release, feeling that maybe this was not the moment for a compilation that dwelt so heavily on the interior lives of artists. Then, before any of us could catch our breath, the new year brought in its own fresh wave of disasters and a global pandemic. Now, as we watch the shock doctrine be applied in its crudest form all around us, the quaintness of this compilation has taken on new meaning.

What started as an exciting first step in our plans for the new decade is now a time capsule. Those moments in the album that seemed wary of the future now sound like moments of premonition. The silly and fun parts are welcome reprieve to the mood of the planet nowadays. But the album is underscored by an unawareness of just how much the world was going to change.

The 12 track FRNDS & FMLY ’20 offers a broader sonic palette compared to our first compilation (F&F’16) cutting through genres, mood and intent. While the label regulars follow their own tangents, new recruits in Flekke, Jevan Antony, Akrti and Murane Athma x Aniruddha Prabhu further expand the sound of  Consolidate.

For Mahima, Rahat Sahab is synonymous with self-expression. He stands for being bold, fearless, and expressing his truth. His lyrics are a pendulum of emotions; he can make you have a plethora of emotions. She further adds that Rahat Sahab can evoke such strong emotions because he’s essentially expressing himself without any filters. His works showcased realism, using minimalistic prose, that left a deep personal impact on her. This qawwali has thus been a result of her expressing those feelings in musical form.
