Surgeons Girl is a pianist studying at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire who continues to apply her classically trained ear for musicality in a singular, exciting and extremely modern way. Having released an EP on Livity Sound earlier this year, SG works with analogue hardware, vocals, piano and generative visuals to produce a vivid blend of ambient and dub-influenced UK-leaning techno beats and bleeps. Announced today as part of the 10 Years of Livity Sound compilation release alongside stalwarts and new names alike (Two Shell, Forest Drive West, Jurango, DJ Plead, Facta, Batu etc), today felt like the perfect time to drop this brilliant mix. “I'm into so many different styles at the minute so it was hard deciding on the vibe I wanted to go for, so there are lots of energy shifts throughout the mix,” she tells us. “It's got some beautiful moments, some deep, moody moments and – of course – some wonky, weirdo high-energy bangers. I also wanted to take the opportunity to showcase some incredible new music from mates, some forthcoming Pressure Dome, and a new remix I've been working on, all of which I'm excited to share!”

3024: Please describe the mix in a single sentence ?

Yushh: A good level of nuts and emotions 

3024: What DJ inspires you at the moment / has inspired you throughout the years and why?

Yushh : Tom Boogizm has played some of my favourite sets over the past couple of years. Unexpected twists and turns but always huge vibes. I’m lucky in Bristol to be around people like Bruce and Batu who’ve always been inspiring to me as DJs - Love the way they carve out their sets in a unique and unpredictable way. I-sha is also a huge inspiration - her sets don’t even sound like dj sets more like a live - so considered and patient and incredible selections. 


3024: What are you working on / what have you got forthcoming?

Yushh : I’ve just finished up a few remixes which should be dropping pretty soon and hoping to finish up another EP and maybe even a mini album by the end of the year. Otherwise I'm looking forward to diving headfirst into festival season then heading to Asia and Auz later in the year for the first time which is crazy exciting.

DJ and producer Yushh transports us to her formative years with the latest Off-Kilter submission. 

Featuring a collection of reflective tracks from 2008-2012, this collage is an insight into her delicate and emotive sound palette - intricate drum workouts, blissed out dub grooves, dream like vocals and emotive melodies phase through bass driven frequencies. 

Here, she tells a tale of what came before, a story of memory and influence, timeless and honest; it’s quintessentially Yushh in the rawest of forms.

Opening the door into somebody else’s apartment is always exciting, especially if you have malicious intentions. Someone could be there. A person may be standing in the corner of their corridor waiting to hit you over the head with a cricket bat. But this particular apartment, this loft was owned by someone wealthy, someone important. Wandering through these halls void of light and full of glimmering curvy things, you don’t really get a sense of who the person was, you never did. You can judge on the outside, but since you’ve snooped in other peoples private spaces before, you realise you can’t get a sense of a person by their belongings or space. All the crap you buy for your place functions as a way of connecting with people. What you have learnt from all the break ins you’ve committed in your life, you can say that much. This thought came from an uncomfortable realisation that humans horde fanatically and scientifically, their thesis being “how can I cause X affect on people in order for Y to happen?”. We furnish our spaces with books, cologne bottles, records, enjoyable figurines, high-functioning furniture, lampshades, novelty shower curtains, sports and music and celebrity memorabilia, souvenirs… to the point where we build a social and, dare I say, political identity centred around these daft objects you surround yourself with. We are very clever rats. Maybe someone you secretly hold dear will see this object and love you for having this object. And so walking in this big exquisite room, you wonder what function do works of art - weather that be a painting or a coffee table book - have in a world where there is no body there to see these objects, whose sole purpose was once to invoke beauty?
Light embroils you, images blast information at you, yet you have no one or nothing to share it with. This mix feels inhibited and free, like walking naked in an empty New York City. A world full of beautiful objects, empty of anyone to see it. With an excellent opening selection, a breezy middle section and a post-modern jazzy come down, this is ideal for study-ambience.

Recently announced for a residency at Sheffield’s institution Hope Works (the first club he ever went out to, *applause* please), this next NSMA-MIX from @porterbrook has been in the tank for a hot minute but we’ve saved it for a special occasion – as we strike our 20th mix in the series! At the helm of the Groundwork parties, Porter has become known as a party starter in Sheffield (past sets alongside Bruce, Batu, Re:ni, Laksa etc.) and is a extremely talented producer, having put out a handful of brilliantly versatile bass-heavy eclecticism via Intervention, Electroménager and his own label. Today though, it’s mostly dnb weapons… no worries.
