Classical Guitar C Minor

The 9th edition of the OneBeat US program brought together 21 OneBeat Fellows from 12 countries & territories to our beloved residency site at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. 

Nestled in the quietude of the beautiful grounds and buildings of this artist residency, Fellows were free to explore this year’s theme - Sonic Imaginaries. The pioneering musician and researcher Pauline Oliveros, describes our preference for visual articulations of our imagination as the priority of the visual over aural spheres of much contemporary culture. But of course imagination is much more than images - it is a realm of possibilities, of the unexpected, and of the new.  What we might call ‘the mind’s ear’ is a distinctive, under-researched form of human self-knowledge, and a way of formulating alternative futures with the help of our auditory capacities. 

This mixtape is a showcase of the work and imaginations of a group of incredible and curious musicians who came together to delve into their  own and each other’s  unique musical worlds and landscapes. We hope that you, the listener, can be nourished by these sonic imaginations and  ‘aurilized’  inner worlds, and travel with us on this journey to the mind's ear!

Drift Aspiring Piano

This piece is meant to give a voice to all of the creatures living in the Amazon Forest however, it can be applicable to all creatures on this earth. Humans tend to only 'listen' to each other and the sounds of their everyday environment. Even 'listening', truly listening to each other has been replaced with cell phones, the Internet, the news (or lack thereof) and any other diversions that can keep us from being still because most of us cannot stand the silence. I wanted that this piece served as a meditation. I wanted the creatures' voices to have prominence and be put in the forefront.

The Amazon Forest and all of its creatures depend on the Amazon River, which can be heard throughout the piece. The smallest creature I used in the composition was the glass frog, who gives us our meditational melody to hum while we go through the forest. His melody is shadowed by a light layer of sparkly bells behind him. The lowly bush dogs carry us through the experience by taking the melody from the glass frog and singing our drone to help us center ourselves. The most dramatic and tension-filled section appears right in the middle, with the jaguar and the ocelot showing off their vocal capabilities. Other featured animals include the capuchin, marmoset, sloth, tamarin and coati. 

The percussion and drums continue to build throughout the piece, just as the melody grows and the experiences of the animals as we encounter them.
