EX-CULT - MIDNIGHT PASSENGER - APRIL 29th

Ex-Cult’s Midnight Passenger is the result of a never ending obsession with the open road. It’s the sound of five people spending the last year in countless dive bars, disgusting motel rooms and on dozens of dirty floors.  Since recording with Ty Segall in 2012 the band hasn’t come up for air, putting four US tours and tons of weekend trips under their belt with the likes of OBN III’s, Captive and Ty Segall.

It was in these dive bars across the USA that Ex-Cult truly found their sound. While some of the songs were played for audiences as early as January of 2013, it wasn’t until a West Coast tour in June that the blue print for Midnight Passenger really started to take form. Taking pieces of every tour back home with them, the band began to hone a sound that captured the desperation of the first record, while being careful to integrate new techniques of negative noise.

Recorded by Doug Easley in January of 2014, Midnight Passenger is comprised of ten songs that were meant to be heard together, each one following a different, damaged storyline. The buzz-saw guitars, kraut rock rhythm section and sneering vocals are all still present, but with Midnight Passenger, Ex-Cult has added a few layers of psychedelic slime to their sound.

Habibi Funk will be a new sub label of Jakarta Records, dedicated to re-releasing arabic music from the 1970s and 1980s. It's a label and platform for funky/soulful and/or psych influenced music from the Arab world of the 70s and 80s.

Dalton was a band from Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. They came together as a band around 1968 when most of the members studied together at the University of Tunis. The band had five members. Faouzi Chekili on guitar, piano and vocals, Ridha Kouhen on bass guitar, Mustapha Rehouma and sax and percussion, Sadok Gharbi on trumpet and vocals and Skaner Alim on drums and vocals. They were active in the local scene, playing music that was heavily influenced by American soul and funk and at the same time regional musical traditions. In the early 70s the band got a regular gig at a beach hotel called Sahara Beach Resort on the coastline of Tunisia. They had six month contracts for a couple of years in the early 70s and during that time they would play every single night of the tourist season. While the hotel gig required the band to play sets leaning      towards tourist entertainment, the regular work helped put some money into the band's accounts. Using those funds the band was able to travel to Rome to record their one and only 7“ single release "Alech" around 1971/1972. The band eventually dismantled in the mid 70s and returned briefly as a new group with new members in the late 1970s under the name Carthago but that is a different story……

The single itself impressed us heavily when we first stumbled upon it through French collector Victor Kiswell. While the b-side "Soul Brother“ sounds like a Tunisian version of modern soul / AOR with it’s English lyrics and lush arrangements, the title track "Alech“ is the one that will get every party started. An infectious 3/4 rhythm, a great horn arrangement and brillantly layered vocals that made us think of Brazillian music or the Georgian groove band Gaya. Luckily Faouzi Chekili, the former band leader and composer uses social media communication so he was easy to track down. He is still active as a renowned musician in the Tunisian jazz scene and remains active recording and playing concerts both in Tunisia and internationally.

Magical Mistakes is the musical moniker (alliteration) of Erik Leubs, a producer/label-head/promoter and overall bossman based out of Osaka, Japan.

We’ve had a storied past with Erik here at Astro Nautico; he first remixed Kuhn’s track “We’re Gonna Make It” back in 2010, which lead us to collaborate with him and Daytripper Records on the '7 x 7' cassette release, an “experiment in cultural exchange and sampling.”

Since then Erik’s been hard at work releasing his own dreamy music (most recently the fantastic Decompose / Reassemble on King Deluxe) and putting together a series of releases and events with Perfect Touch, through which he’s toured and released music by Sweatson Klank, Seiho, Free The Robots and our own Obey City.

It only makes sense that we finally asked Erik to contribute to our ASTROCAST series, especially in lieu of something else very exciting coming later this summer.

February 1st, marked the late reggae and lover's rock icon Dennis Brown's 59th birthday. Hailed by NPR Morning Edition as one of the 50 great voices of all time and by Bob Marley as one of the best reggae singers in the world - the revered Jamaican icon began his recording career at the tender age of 11 and has more than 75 albums to date. Even though he passed away at the early age of 42, his music and legacy lives on.

VP Records, reggae's leading distributor and label, will pay homage this spring with an extensive tribute album We Remember Dennis Brown of his timeless hits covered by some reggae and r&b's most renowned artists today. Each song was re-produced by Jamaican legend Clive Hunt with his all-star team of musicians to give each song an authentic yet fresh feel.

To celebrate the icon during his birthday month, VP Records will reveal one song from the album every Friday for the next five weeks - including "Caress Me Girl" on Feb 5 from one of Jamaica's brightest voices Romain Virgo, "Milk & Honey" on Feb 12 by roots reggae rockers Raging Fyah, "Bloody City" on Feb 19 from the Caribbean's soulful songstress Jah9, "Promised Land" on Feb 26 from Hawaiian reggae band The Green and "Have You Ever" on Mar 4 by R&B powerhouse Marsha Ambrosius.

In addition to these power hitters, We Remember Dennis Brown will feature an array of singers from Brown's native country and across the globe who he influenced. Jamaica's latest crop of stars (including Jah Cure, Gyptian, Chronixx and Jesse Royal) as well as the island's icons who worked with Brown (like reggae vocalists Bushman and Freddie McGregor) all offer their contributions. Freddie's son Chino McGregor and Christopher Ellis, the talented UK-based singer and offspring of Alton Ellis (another one of Brown's musical mentors and confidants), both deliver powerful renditions of Brown's classics. New Zealand rockers also create a breezy rendition of "If I Had The World." The worldly collection proves that his universal sound transcends all boundaries of time, race and creed. Each artist adds their own original flair to Brown's profound soul-stirring sound - touching the hearts of new and old fans alike on this unique multi-disc collection. We Remember Dennis Brown will include deluxe packaging as well as extensive liner notes on the belated legend.

Dennis Brown was greatly influenced by American balladeers such as Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin as well as Jamaican singers like Delroy Wilson and John Holt. At only 12-years-old, he cut his first hit "No Man Is An Island" at Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's famous Studio One. Within the years, he was a force to be reckoned with musically - dubbed the "Boy Wonder of Jamaica" and "Crown Prince of Reggae." Before he was 16, he had worked with Jamaica's top recording artists (Alton Ellis, Horace Andy) and producers of the time (Prince Buster, Dennis Alcapone, Winston "Niney" Holness and Vincent "Randy" Chin). In the 1970s, he worked closely with producer Joe Gibbs and released multiple albums. One of the album's songs "Money in my Pocket," peaked at #14 on UK Top 40 chart becoming one of the biggest international hits in Jamaica's history. This success landed him the cover of the NME's February 1979 issue. Enthusiastically adapting to the new dancehall era, Brown released a huge amount of work throughout the 1980s recording with genre's major producers like King Jammy on Brown's 1986 album The Exit and Gussie Clarke in 1989 with the Gregory Isaacs duet "Big All Round" and the album Unchallenged. He continued to record prolifically in the 1990s before his passing. His 1994 album Light My Fire and 2001 release Let Me Be the One were both nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.

Glasgow's Batteries, the trading name of bis boy Steven Clark, return with the absolute rock hammer of "Pankhurst".
