Led by drummer / multi-instrumentalist Max Weissenfeldt (The Whitefield Brothers, The Poets of Rhythm, The Polyversal Souls) and Peruvian guitarist Alex Mendoza, this new studio ensemble takes it’s cues from Max’s experience under several different band variations that have explored Late-60’s Funk & Soul, West African Rhythms, Ethiopian Grooves and now, for the first time on record, Afro-Peruvian Cumbia. Alex Mendoza’s quintessentially Peruvian style psychedelic guitar licks lay a sabor never heard before onto Max's typically raw and funky percussion style. It’s another notch in an increasingly diversified portfolio for Max.

This mix is inspired by the new grassroots civil rights movement that’s been emerging since Eric Garner’s death.

The theme "Rise" responds to Garner's last words, "I can't breathe." The time has come for humankind to wholeheartedly rise to the challenges of racial injustice. Peace can only come once we’re ready to extend a hand towards the unknown. This mix is inspired by these ideas, but it’s not completely tied to them. There’s also the desire for fun here, and to take you on a sonic journey through a range of contrasting genres of music.

The career arc of Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids has been an unexpected but wonderful one. The band met in Ohio in the early 1970s, studied with jazz greats including Cecil Taylor, performed throughout Europe and Africa and released three independent albums before disbanding during the late '70s. Renown for their recordings grew over the years, culminating in Ackamoor reconvening the band in 2007. They have recorded the incredible new album 'We Be All Africans,' produced by Max Weissenfeldt at Philophon in Berlin, and are touring once again, sharing the stage with Floating Points on a recent tour. 

Here, DJ duo We Are The Horsemen (DJ Harv and Sub-One) take us through the original rare recordings which earned the band its reputation among connoisseurs of mind expanding jazz. The one-hour mix spans the band's entire career.

Gitkin re-branded, sold and traded knock-off Gibson guitars. It took him to most corners of the USA, passing through big, smoggy cities and nowheresville small towns. His nights were spent at not-so-salubrious motels, places where he’d cross paths with newcomers and immigrants to the States from all four corners of the globe. His illicit musical wares were his way of making a connection. He’d strike up tentative, half-understood exchanges; part old stories and legends, part musical dialogue, part rough-and-ready riffs. There is a Sudanese influence on Whiskey Road. The Jumbush is used on this along with electric guitar.
