The primary soundtrack to my Y2 University composition module game project "The Gauntlet".

The Gauntlet

Track 1 of 2 for arcade driving demo game "Project DJrift" that I created for one of my university modules. This was produced and rendered in tiers (as you can hear from the gradual development of instrumentation/layers) for the game, and each tier would loop depending on the player's progress.

This track involved me getting comfortable with using non-traditional chords and chromaticism. Being a classically-trained musician all my life, writing "weird" harmonies always felt like a sin in some sense. This project helped break me out of that habit and embrace the wonderful unorthodox nature of heavy chromaticism and dissonance.

Project DJrift: Funk (Track 1)

Track 2 of 2 for arcade driving demo game "Project DJrift" that I created for one of my university modules. This was produced and rendered in tiers (as you can hear from the gradual development of instrumentation/layers) for the game, and each tier would loop depending on the player's progress.

This track was initially a personal project that I started a long time ago, when I decided to produce something extremely average (as I had a habit of trying to make something too unique and therefore not getting much done). I decided to go for relatively common chord progressions and production techniques.

By the time the university project came around, I was inspired to cook up something simple as a temporary soundtrack to test the audio integration/systems, and instead ended up repurposing this track for the final soundworld.

Project DJrift: House (Track 2)

Growing up, I have always had an interest in cars and motorsports, and in these 3 miniatures (as part of a composition portfolio at university) I attempt to condense the essence of mechanical performance and racing into three distinct abstractions.  

The first miniature is named Atmosphere – an abstract and dramatized auditory experience of being next to a racetrack, and hearing the sounds of high-performance vehicles and the surrounding air. I drew inspiration from online videos of one of the longest (and most dangerous) racetracks in the world, the Nurburgring-Nordschleife, which snakes through the surrounding German mountain forests, and has spectator areas at high-speed straights. 

The second miniature, Ignition, presents a rhythmic “dance” between the different parts of a car’s powertrain, from the fuel injection systems and exhaust to the pistons and crankshaft, giving rise to the eventual power that propels our daily commute, or a racing driver across the finish line. Harmony is a strong theme in this piece – not tonal harmony, but the harmony of every part of the car working as a whole to simply go as fast as possible, as efficiently as possible. 

Last but not least is Anticipation, which has a relatively more linear narrative compared to the previous miniatures: a racing driver is lining up on a starting grid when fear and anxiety swallows them whole. As the five red lights begin to light up one by one, they manage to collect themselves and get their nervousness under control. They continue setting up the car for the race, waiting for the lights to go out and to drop the clutch for the perfect launch off the line. 

Regarding the recorded material, I used studio equipment for some gestural and atmospheric sounds. For authentic recordings of car sounds, I visited Performance M Manchester, who very generously allowed me to enter their workspaces and parking areas to record engine revs, pops and bangs (completely free of charge). Cars recorded include quite a few tuned BMWs, a couple Audis and a Toyota Supra that happened to be there in the workshop on the day I visited.

Into The Sun (for LANESPLIT)

Inspired by the music of Stardew Valley and Terraria.

I tried to convey what I imagine a soundtrack for exploring an underwater cave/diving would be like in both games.

Made in 30 minutes! Just a spontaneous spark of inspiration.

I got bored one day and thought about the game Alien: Isolation - just wanted to create something that belonged to media of that genre (Alien, Dead Space etc.).
